“One stupid thing keeps this place from being great.”
Reviewed September 1, 2013

The food was great, the service was excellent, the place had good karma. The one thing that is a super-easy change would be to turn most all of their tables sideways. Who wants to look at a brick wall for an hour and a half when the window views are quite good?

“Definitely worth trying”
Reviewed July 31, 2013

Large room with widely spaced wooden tables. Décor: upscale vibe. Didn’t have a chance ot check out the bar more closely but it looks well stocked. There were lots of choices on the wine list primarily by the bottle. Good service and good food with a very interesting menu, most of which is locally sourced. Our group tried the soft shell crab appetizer that was tasty—a mix of flavors, citrus and heirloom tomatoes. Mains included grouper, snapper, Pekin duck and beef. The fish and duck were very good and had creative vegetable sides. The beef was good though some bits had a lot of chewy membrane. The pistou was a bit overwhelming.

I would definitely go again and would be more interested in exploring the lunch menu which is less pricey.

Tip during hot summer days: avoid a table that is directly under an overhead pipe that has condensation build up. The water was dripping down onto our table and into a water glass before we realized what was happening. Not so appetizing if it drips into a $12 wine glass or onto the food. The waitress said that they were aware of the problem and that they mopped up the condensation before service. But this doesn’t solve the problem.

“Great place for lunch during the week.”
Reviewed July 30, 2013

Oakleaf is located in an old mill building and, at lunch time, they have what they call the Millworker's lunch. Pick any two items on the menu for only $15.00. The regular lunch menu always has very good choices as well. One of my favorites is the wild mushroom salad with an egg gathered that very morning. The pasta dishes are always good and the artisanal cheese plate comes with honey and an excellent array of cheeses -- different ones each time I've had it.

The food is even better in the evenings but I no longer go there then. There is absolutely nothing in the place to absorb sound (wood floor, brick walls, high ceiling, etc.) and the noise level is unbearable. When a friend complained that she could not hear anyone at the table OR the waitstaff, the owner shrugged and told her it was now "the custom" to have high noise levels in restaurants. I've heard the same complaint about noise from several other people. Too bad because the food would certainly make it worth your while to go there if they just made it a more pleasant experience in the evening. As it is, go at lunch during the week and enjoy!

“Excellent farm to table local food”
Reviewed July 29, 2013

Great upscale local farm to table food - like Chatham County rabbit. Best Pot d'creme dessert I have had - want to go back just for that. Had the local farm raised pork chop - was really good. Make reservations - can get crowded on busy nights. That is the only knock - due to it's location in a renovated mill - the acoustics are not great - it gets very loud - so if you want to talk over a quiet dinner - this is not the place when it is crowded.

“Gwen and I Love Oakleaf”
Reviewed July 18, 2013

Gwen and I have had great service and experienced wonderful dining at Oakleaf. Their wine list and wine parings are outstanding; their menu is also very extensive. The chefs do such a superb job of preparing the food and it is just the correct amount. The old textile mill ambiance is very cool and historical. My wife and I keep going back; one of our favorite restaurants.
