The Carolina Hotel - Pinehurst Resort

The Carolina at Pinehurst is an old hotel that is well kept by a very professional staff and management. Due to its age, there are some areas of the hotel that are not up to 5 star standards, but they are really inconsequential. I would rate this hotel at 4 and 1/2 stars, if that were available in the Trip Advisor rating system.

Anyone coming to Pinehurst must be coming for the world class golf. We drove to the resort and checked in to the Carolina after a considerable drive. Everyone who greeted and assisted us was professional, friendly and most accommodating. Our room was fresh and clean, but showed signs of age. The Carolina is a wooden structure and there was a slight slope in the floor of our room. This can't be helped, but I was always aware that it was just a little uphill to walk into the bathroom.

The breakfast buffet is a terrific feature. Great breakfast food, excellent service and a comfortable table make each morning a happy one. Jackets are requested for dining in the main dining room at night. As wonderful as the breakfast buffet was each day, the dinners shined brilliantly. The service was attentive and the dishes offered were of outstanding quality.

If you are a serious golfer, then a pilgrimage to Pinehurst should be a great priority. When you go, I recommend The Carolina without reservation.

What a trip!!! Who can't nit pick about this or that. Stayed at the Carolina, was upgraded to a larger room with 2 king beds and a seating area, very comfortable. Bathroom was clean although a little on the smaller side, was very accommodating had a nice size walk-in closet. The staff from our reservation point person to the locker room attendant were well trained and attentive. The staff made the trip that much more enjoyable. All in great mood and eager to serve. Golf Academy pros were easy to work with and positive with their teaching. Let's talk about the food, AWESOME, great breakfast buffet at the Carolina, lunch was at the Donald Ross in the main clubhouse(pretzel bites delish), dinner at both the Carolina and 1895 Grill were top notch. The 1895 grill has a nicer room, smaller and a little quieter than the Carolina. Went to play #2 and found out that #'s 8 & 4 are just as much an experience. Think #8 is the best course of the lot. Thought it was a once in a lifetime trip but will be back to enjoy all Pinehurst has to offer. Enjoy your trip.

This is my fourth visit and I loved the first three...a throwback ( requiring dressing for dinner) but charming with outstanding and efficient service. No longer. First, the rooms badly need a renovation-they are tired, and in mine the carpet is coming up. But worse, they are clearly skimping on competent service people. All the golf bags of our group were taken to the wrong course although the Pinehurst provided tags were clear. Fine, mistakes happen. But it took 40 minutes to get the bags to the correct course requiring us to reschedule our tee time. And we had to be the ones to suggest that perhaps they had been sent to the course we were playing tomorrow, or they might still never have arrived! And why 40 minutes-because no shuttles were available! We had said we would take our car and get them but were told not to worry-had they said no shuttles, fine but dont keep telling us the clubs will be here in ten minutes when they wont. And dont tell us "we are doing the best you can"-the best you can is to expeditiously correct your error, not wait until finally a shuttle is available. Similarly we waited at the golf house twenty minutes for a shuttle before walking back to the hotel...during our time on the one road between the two no shuttle passed-again they are skimping on shuttles. Inefficient service, lack of attention detail and saving money by skimping service...sadly this is the new Pinehurst and I wont be back. Im only sorry that my time is prepaid and I cant leave until Wednesday!

So some of these other reviews are crazy! The whole appeal of Pinehurst is it's history and older charm. ..the floors somewhat creak in Carolina - who cares if you want to stay @ Marriott or a quiet place then rent a house.

The meals were outstanding - The breakfast buffet and the golf package w/ dinner included was an AMAZING deal. For dinner you can order an app (any price), entree (any price) and dessert (any price) - I'd believe my dinner was at least $60 each night.

Being escorted to the golf course in a shuttle was an amazing touch. ..felt like a pro and the caddies was also awesome! course conditions was great (could be a touch better with filling up divots on the fairway) but still an experience never to forget!

Room Tip: Have dinner at the carolina room and ask for Angie or Angela. ...you will have a southern experience...

Recently stayed at the Carolina Hotel on a golf trip to Pinehurst. This review focuses on the accommodations, not the golf. This particular hotel is old, tired and in need of a serious renovation. Although the staff is very accommodating, they can't do anything about rooms with paper-thin walls and water pressure that was non-existent (I would not have wanted to be in that room if my significant other had to wash her hair there). The Carolina also houses the conference facility for the Pinehurst complex so make sure that your room is nowhere near the conference facilities.

Although I didn't stay there, several of my friends stayed at the Holly property in the village of Pinehurst and were OK with that. Bottom line, if you are going strictly for golf with a bunch of guys, I guess the Carolina OK (the incredible breakfast buffet does help). If you are bringing your spouse, however, stay in the village at the Holly. I don't know how the golf works if you don't stay at a Pinehurst property, but it might be worth looking into.

Room Tip: Get a room far removed from the conference facilities

The Carolina surely has it's charm. However, Pinehurst is nothing but golf and that needs to change for the resort to survive another 100 years. All in all, The Carolina is a fine hotel. It's old so you should expect smaller rooms and bathrooms. All room doors slam shut...not a problem at 3pm but huge problem at 3am.

Room Tip: Have breakfast in The Carolina Dining Room. The biscuits and gravy will fill you up all day long.

Although it's known for its golf courses, Pinehurst resort and the Carolina hotel is a gorgeous place. The grounds and beautiful, the staff was impeccable, and the historic downtown area is oozing with charm. Even if you aren't a golfer, you will love this place!

Room Tip: Try to avoid the ground floor.
