Not our first trip to Ocracoke, but our first trip to Back Porch. Incredible meal. I had the seafood platter with speckled trout, scallops, shrimp and a crab beignet that was unbelievable. My wife had a shrimp with fettuccine dish with a smoked tequila cream sauce that was out of this world. Our server was attentive and the meal came quickly despite being a little busy. Great dining experience on the "Back Porch!"

We had dinner at the Back Porch following a wine tasting event at Zillie's ~ It was around 7:30 and not crowded. They offer indoor and outdoor seating. It was a bit muggy and so the mosquitoes were out and about (they keep repellent available for all guests to spray on as desired) but we elected to remain indoors.
I had the seafood empanadas and scallops in butter and cream. Simple and divine. My husband had the Crab Beignets and the burger. Also sublime, but I felt my empanadas were definitely better than his crab beignets...the crab was blended into a mixture and so the texture was more homogenous and not as distinctively crab-like but anyway....we never had a tastier meal and the service was terrific. I had a mojito with dinner and it was well prepared, with lots of lime and fresh muddled mint...truly authentic. Love it. Would love to go back and if they were closer to me here in PA, I'd probably be there every week!

Our 4th and last visit here. Service was terrible to a family party of 8. One of the tables was so unstable that we asked for the manager. No one came and we had to deal with a tippy table throughout dinner. it needs to be removed. Asked for a wine menu and waitress forgot. We finally asked the bus woman who spoke no English. One of our family speaks fluent Spanish and so we finally got it. Our waitress simply disappeared for long stretches of time. The special, mahi mahi was dry and over cooked for two members of our party. We chose not to have dessert and coffee there, it was so disappointing. We will no longer recommend and/or return.

We are from Virginia Beach so we have pretty high seafood standards...on our way back from visiting family in North Carolina, we decided to take the "scenic route" and travel up 17, take the ferries and see the Outer Banks. We stopped in Ocracoke for dinner....Yelp, Trip Advisor and Urbanspoon all highly rated Back Porch for dinner. Overall, it was a good choice.

It's not too casual and not too fancy. We sat on the covered porch which was a great place to sit and enjoy the fresh air. The place settings include multiple forks, glass goblets, and linen napkins so its on the upscale side but not too stuffy.

Our waiter was very nice and attentive. He brought a plate of fruit (unasked) to our table for our 14 month old which was very appreciated. On Tuesdays (the night we were there) it is "Tapas NIght". This is perfect because we ordered two small plates for our 7 year old and toddler and it was just enough food for them, without paying an entree price. They got the butternut squash ravioli and the crispy avocado. Husband and I tasted a small bite of each and they were both very good. However, the sauce that comes with the crispy avocado is a little spicy.

Husband and I ordered the grilled eggplant with tahini sauce as an app. It was really hard to pick one app since they all sounded good. The eggplant was cooked perfectly and the sauce was an excellent complement...even the children ate bites and said it was good.

Husband and I both ordered the seafood platter since we wanted to try a variety of items. This can be a hit or miss at other seafood restaurants. Back Porch's platter was perfect. The fish of the day was bluefish. It, along with the scallops and shrimp, were seasoned and cooked just right. I HATE overcooked seafood so this platter was really impressive that everything came out great, not one dry or rubbery bite in the whole plate. The entrees come with a side of white rice and squash. It was pretty good but pretty ordinary. We were also given a basket of crusty bread that was warm and tasty. Overall, there was plenty of food for all of us and it was delicious.

Prices are a little on the high end, but you are paying for the nice ambiance and the seafood so it was too be expected. Not anything higher then what we pay at home in our normal seafood restaurants.

We heard from the reviews, the desserts were really great, but unfortunately we were in a hurry to get back on the road and catch the hatteras ferry so we skipped.

We will definitely re-visit next time we are in Ocracoke.
