Castle on Silver Lake
Ranked #3 of 7 Ocracoke B&B and Inns
Reviewed October 14, 2013

The castle is a little different, not a hotel and not a B&B. It is pretty much as it was 25 or more years ago. The interior is very much period, lots of antiques and furnishings. The staff was most helpful and their breakfast is very nice. Its a well prepaired country breakfast with flair. We pulled up chairs and visited with the cooks both mornings we were there. The beds were not the best, but its all clean. The air conditioning for the rooms leaves a little to be desired. Not sure how that would work out it the weather was hot. The location is very good and so is the view!

Well, I guess we are a little different, you are right! First of all thank you for your review. We read each one and pass along to our staff in an effort to improve our customer service and provide the best experience possible for each guest. Each winter, when we are closed for a short period, we do try to refurbish and replenish our rooms so that when we reopen we are ready for another season. I will make sure we check out the bed in the room you stayed in.

Please do plan on coming back to Ocracoke and The Castle on Silver Lake.
Thanks again

We were blessed with a week of wondrous weather and we took advantage of all that The Castle and Ocracoke had to offer. The Lake Room was delightful and the staff treated us like old friends !
The breakfast was heavenly and we were so taken with all the warm conversation in the kitchen, that we never made it to the dining room.
Even with the government shut-down in effect,we still managed to get to the beach and drive the bikes all over town ! shops shops shops ! Wonderful !
The old Ocracoke Museum is a must,as is Springer Point, the Pony Pen and the beautiful beaches just before sunrise when you can see the Milky Way !!!
Don't hesitate to make reservations at The Castle. ..you'll travel home with warm, beautiful memories.

Room Tip: Lake room is roomy if you stay more than a night or two..we stayed six !

"Heaven on Earth" is how we also think of Ocracoke, and it was nice to see that in your post. I enjoy hearing that our visitors made time for some of the wonderful attractions here. Thank you so much for your kind words and recommendations, we appreciate that. Please come back again, soon.

Five stars for Ocracoke. The Castle gets an extra star for the town in which it is located. A villa room means no breakfast, no pool table either. While I can understand a restriction limiting breakfast to the B&B residents if table space is an issue, it is harder to follow the logic when the pool table stands empty, as it was during most of our stay. Our room was adequate, the lower floor location was quiet, the bed was comfortable and the room was well equipped. The facility was handsome so you get to take a nice souvenir photo.

Room Tip: First class patrons stay in the B&B.

Thank you for your review. I think Ocracoke deserves five stars as well! We love our little island. I was glad to hear you found your villa comfortable and well equipped. We work very hard to make sure our guests have a good stay, whether they are staying the actual Bed and Breakfast or in one of the adjacent villas.

Regarding the use of the pool table in the Castle B&B parlor:
The Castle B&B is owned by several families and they pay for all utilities, breakfast food, amenities, maintenance and everything else associated with the Castle B&B.

Each villa is owned by different individuals who do not pay for expenses related to the Castle B&B. Ocracoke Island Realty is the rental manager for The Villas but because of the close proximity of the villas to the B&B (which OIR also manages) we felt it was more convenient for villas guests to check in and out at the B&B instead of requiring them to go to the OIR office.

I understand your feelings about the pool table but we try to let villas guests know in advance that the B&B and offers different amenities than the villas.

We do appreciate that you stayed in one of the villas and hope you will come back again...maybe give the B&B a try next time.

Thank you for your post

great B&B, located in the center of Ocracoke which makes is walking distance to most things. Morning breakfast is simply fantastic, which is the only way to describe it...all home made and delicious, with changes each and every morning. The staff is friendly, cordial and more than willing to assist in your every need. We enjoyed our morning cup of coffee on the dock watching the sunrise and again wtih our cocktails watching the sunset each day...A most relaxing stay overall.

So, we were in the Harbor Room, a nice big room that is fully finished in wood with with excellent joinery and detail. The views were spectacular and the building made our imagination wander to the times of sail...that these accomodations would be fit for a captain (if he were ever to be ashore). The morning breakfast was great and the Castle is close to pretty much everything in town. There is ample parking and the grounds are simply beautiful. The only issue I found was that the plugs in the room were not three-prong. I had to plug the laptop into the GFIC outlet in the bathroom. As I am writing this, I am sitting in the "sitting room" in between our room and the bathroom. LOL! Seriously, if this is the only thing wrong with the place, I will tak ethis all day long on any vacation! We will stay here again and are already telling our friends and planning our next stay here. One other thing we absolutely LOVED was the fact that they did not frown on us bringing our 13-year old with. She was going to bring a friend but it didn't work out. They owners were fine with it. Oftentimes B&Bs don't like kids. Our kids behave (we don't believe inletting the kids run rampant and act like fools). We appreciate a B&B that can treat everyone like adults and have the expectations for the same from everyone. We love it here! Geez... I'm already writing a review and wanting to come back...we haven't even left yet after the first time!

Room Tip: CALL ahead and talk to the staff. They will help you choose a room if you are honest about your need...

My fiance and I fell in love a year ago while camping on Ocracoke and we went back and stayed at the Castle in July. The location is perfect, very close to the center of town and at night we walked across the street to the dock overlooking the water with a glass of wine. It's a quick bike ride to the lighthouse, ocean or virtually anything. Our room was very spacious, the breakfast was excellent and the pool was clean. We appreciated the free bikes, however were disappointed that often they would be "checked out" yet we could see that people were really just storing them in places to keep for themselves rather than sharing. We ended up renting our own bikes one night because every time we looked the bikes continued to be "checked out" even though you could easily walk around and see 6 or 7 that were not being used.

We are glad you came back to our island and decided to stay at The Castle. It sounds like you picked up the feel of Ocracoke very quickly and we are always happy to hear that our guests found the accommodations comfortable. Our breakfasts are almost always mentioned in the reviews we receive and I am glad to hear you enjoyed yours.

As for the checked out bikes, I have forwarded your review to our innkeeper, Maybe we can come up with a different system. Thank you for letting us know that there was an issue.

Please come back...as soon as you can!

We had so much fun at The castle. Our every need was met, and the staff went out of their way to make sure we were comfortable. We were on a 2 week tour of Eastern NC, and a restful stop at this property was just what we needed. We especially enjoyed taking a bottle of wine across the street to the dock over the water in the evening. A beautiful place to spend a vacation....,
Thanks for everything, G/J
