Our first visit to see the ponies on Ocracoke was much better; we saw quite a few of them. On this visit, about 12 years later, they had built shelters for the ponies - that and some people inside the pen were all that we saw.

I totally support and understand the need to keep these ponies in an enclosure for their safety, but I wish there was a better way to see them!

The rating is actually for the beach area at the Pony Pen location (The pony pens are average - the last of the Banker ponies and they are in a fence and not many were visible). Park your car here and spend the day at the beach. What a gorgeous beach! It is much wider and our boys had a wonderful day playing here. One of our favorite beach sections.

Many thanks to the Park Ranger at Wright Brothers NHS who gave us the tip about this memorable beach.
*** Beware - make sure to check the ferry schedule. We thought that we'd get on the
8 pm ferry to return to Nags Head, and instead were lucky to have made the 10 pm ferry...

If you know the history of the Ocracoke ponies this place is worth the visit, but only as a side trip. It only takes a few minutes to view the ponie and then you can cross the "highway" to walk onto the beach or continue up to Hattaras.
