“Overall a Hit”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 13, 2014

Stopped by Flying Fish for Sunday Brunch this morning. Could not resist a cup of Chef Rhonda's Cream of Mushroom Soup along with my eggs. This stuff is legendary! Also ordered the frittata of the day which was potato and peppers and onions. I have had the frittata there other Sundays and it has always been delicious. Today, it was just off. The bottom was too dark and that burned flavor permeated the entire item. Fortunately, our waiter who was very attentive, stopped by our table right after I started and asked how everything was. I had to be honest about the frittata and he cheerfully exchanged it for the French Toast. Oh my. Not just ANY French Toast - these are slices of egg-dipped bread stuffed with cream cheese and apricot jam and grilled to perfection. Accompanied by bacon and fresh fruit, it couldn't have been better. As others mention, this is a typical beach food shack from the outside, but Rhonda's entire menu is creative and unusual. One of my favorite things is her Gorgonzola Burger. Thick, juicy and just plain wonderful - and you can get that for Sunday brunch!

“Perfect meal”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 4, 2014

Our server, Donna, was pleasant and helpful throughout the meal. We started with the hummus platter: roasted red pepper and black bean hummus made daily and served with warm flat bread. Chef Rhonda’s food is always amazing. I am a vegetarian and for me, she prepared polenta with sautéed Portobello mushrooms, spinach, and garlic, with a mustard sauce. My husband had the sesame-seared tuna with a jicama slaw over a bed of rice. Both meals were scrumptious. For dessert, we had the Banana Xango, which featured banana and caramel fried inside a tostada and topped with cinnamon and a caramel drizzle. It was the perfect conclusion to a great meal. If you are looking for a great place to eat on Oak Island, I recommend The Flying Fish Café.

“Just SO SO”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 2, 2014

We went to flying fish on a local's recommendation...We were disappointed. The roasted beet salad sounded good...We have had this type of salad before where the beets were actually roasted...well here they tasted like pickled beets... dropped on top of some so so romaine with a few walnuts... The fish tacos were fish bit tacos not fish fillet tacos...big difference! the jimcama slaw was good...Overall overpriced...Over rated...if you don't get a window seat what's to like about it?

“Fresh and delicious”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 30, 2014

Our first visit this year and they've added some new items to the menu. Highly recommend the shrimp over cauliflower - great flavors! I've heard about substituting cauliflower for mashed potatoes and it was excellent. Brought a tasty cab with us from Grape and Ale. Our party of six enjoyed every minute of our evening.

“Outstanding Beach Restaurant”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 17, 2014

The Flying Fish Café - Located on the beach. Don't let the outside scare you. The food and service were outstanding.
I had friend shrimp and was excellent. Located next to the large Oak Island Pier.
Looking forward to going back.
