One of the nicest restaurants in town. Have been taking guests there for years. Their African Bread Pudding dessert was featured in Our State magazine as one of the foods NC visitors must try. Consistent high quality and service.

Luckily we called ahead for a reservation and learned that although they don't take them for parties under 6, you can call 30 minutes in advance and be placed on the "call ahead list", which we did. Our wait on a very busy Saturday night was only 20 minutes, as opposed to the 1 hour those who did not call ahead were given. Delicious strawberry basil lemonade cocktail with vodka and prosecco! Fabulous watermelon, mango and praline salad! Yummy seared sea scallops with black eyed peas and jasmine rice!

We went to The Chelsea on a Saturday night in July as part of a group of 39. We made reservations many weeks earlier, so this was not a surprise. The Chelsea has a "banquet room" upstairs for groups exactly like ours. There appeared to be two other groups there as well.

Our reservations were for 6:30. The main problem is that they didn't have near enough servers to take care of the banquet room. We only had 2 servers assigned to our entire group, and they were also covering other tables. It took an hour just to order, and another hour before the food started coming out. We had a separate table just of kids. For the first hour they were very well behaved. But after an hour, they were starving. After about 1 1/2 hours, I was able to find a server and asked him to bring them some rolls. His reply was astounding. He explained that they only made so much bread and everyone in the main restaurant wanted it, so basically the children couldn't have any. When our food started to come, it came out in bits and pieces - at our table there was over a 10 minute delay between the first and last person to be served his/her entree. The food was average at best, which I am sure was the result of a kitchen that was unable to accomodate the quantity of orders, coupled with the extra time it took to get the food to the tables. The rest of the service was equally horrible -- drink orders (we finally gave up and went to the bar ourselves), water, etc. Then it took at least 15 mintues to get our checks and another 15 minutes to process the cards. And, of course, they included the mandatory 18% gratuity, which was laughable. Different people in our group tried to talk with different people in the restaurant, but nothing helped. A manager never showed up. No adjustments to the bill - nothing.

Perhaps The Chelsea would be a decent restaurant to experience in a small group. But in light of our experience, it is highly doubtful that we will ever go back to find out.

The Chelsea is everything a fine restaurant should be...absolutely delicious, perfectly prepared, fresh tasting food, impeccable service, friendly atmosphere and caring staff. Let's go back to the food!!! Very creative preparation, seasoned well but not overly aggressive, and just soooo tasty! The portions were large enough that I had lunch for the next day. Two of my party had the short ribs special and it was hands down the most intoxicating preparation we had ever tasted! Any trip to New Bern should include the Chelsea!!!
