Attraction details
Owner description: Colonial Governors ruled, legislators debated, patriots gathered and George Washington danced. At Tryon Palace, where British rule once flourished, American independence took root and the state of North Carolina was born. Here you can still experience the adventure of North Carolina’s earliest beginnings and a living history like no other. Guided tours, live re-enactments and conversations with costumed interpreters from centuries past bring history to life in vivid detail at the Governor’s Palace, Gardens and Historic Homes. And, at the new high-tech North Carolina History Center, interactive games and hands-on exhibits delight visitors young and old. Whether you’re exploring one of our riverside gardens or sharpening your skills as a quilter, printer, ship’s captain or blacksmith, there are endless opportunities for making cherished family memories at Tryon Palace.

Great historic/restored buildings, tours, extensive seasonal gardens and on occasion free NC orchestra concerts.

“First captial of NC”
Reviewed November 25, 2013

This is must see if you visit near New Bern, NC. The Palace is the governor's house as New Bern was the first state capital. The building is grand and the gardens rival many larger gardens. The live reproductions capture the time period very well. The gardens are well kept.

“Great family stop”
Reviewed November 25, 2013

The Tryon Palace complex includes the NC History Center, the "palace" building & gardens, New Bern Academy, and several historic homes. Plenty of history for a whole day or weekend. I especially like the palace on the 4th of July, when they re-enact a reading of the Declaration of Independence, and the Christmas festival, with masquerade ball and Jonkunu festivities and the Senora Bella act. Great fireworks and drum & fife performance with both events.

“1 day pass for Tryon Palace”
Reviewed November 11, 2013

My boyfriend and I bought 1 day passes and started as soon as the grounds were opened. Make sure you have plenty of time. The tours run smoothly and timely and were very fun and informative.
