Visited here our first day in New Bern, since it was raining off and on that day. It was a little confusing finding the museum at first, it appears that they are preparing to move the museum to the old New Bern Fire Station, and the sign for the museum is right in front of the old Fire Station, but the building is currently empty. It's a small museum, with several old pieces of fire apparatus, some horse drawn and an old crank start ladder truck and an old engine, along with pictures and stories from New Bern firefighting history. They also have a small store inside where they sell some books, postcards, T-shirts and such. There is a small admission fee. Only downside is that it seems a little crowded with all the equipment, and the before noted confusion with the location. Once they complete the move to the old fire station, those problems should be resolved.

Our seven and eight year old grandsons loved all the equipment! The host did a great job explaining about all of the old equipment from alarms to steam engines and especially telling about the first two fire companies. It is well worth the visit!

Visited last year...what a great city!!.Wonderfully restored and vibrant downtown area. Reminds me of a smaller, neater version of Charleston S.C.

It's all the history of the New Bern fire department packed into a small building. Don't let its small size fool you. There is a LOT of information to take in, so plan at least 2 hours. I personally loved Fred the Fire Horse, who actually talks. Admission is not too pricey, and the Pepsi cafe is right around the corner.

The New Bern Firemen's Museum is a small museum highlighting New Bern's firehouse history. It is located adjacent to one of the two volunteer fire departments that competed against each other before they shared the same building where the museum is located. It costs $5 per adult for both the entrance and tour if you choose one.

There is a volunteer who will give you a tour if you choose. I would advise taking the quick tour, as you will learn much more about the history of the town than you would by just looking at the fire engines. If you are into US Civil War history, there is information that is relevant as one of the two competing volunteer fire departments after the was were respectively made up of Union soldiers in one and Confederate soldiers in the other.

Given the history in New Bern, I would recommend stopping at the Firemen's Museum. You will learn something regardless of your age.
