“Gem of a B & B in New Bern”
Reviewed November 20, 2009

The Sail Inn is one of those pleasant surprises that one gets from time to time while traveling. It is in a great location, a short walk from the Tryon Palace, the major tourist site in New Bern and a short distance from the center of town. The place is a historic building that has been beautifully done as a bed and breakfast with the 3 rooms on the second floor and the breakfast in a lovely front room on the first floor. The furnishings are first class and make you feel right at home. The beds and linens are the best we ever experienced in many years of travel. The Sail inn is run from Michael and Karen, who make you feel welcome and are very helpful with suggestions about the area, but leave guests on their own, The inn has all the right touches from off street parking to wi fi to snacks in your room to cable TV in each room. Breakfast is set out with wonderful pastries, fruit and small breakfast sandwichesas well as juice, coffe and tea (sodas are also available for guests).

We would strongly recommend the Sail Inn to anyone going to New Bern--it is a wonderful place to stay.

The house is just the right size. The rooms are quiet and on the 2nd floor. Beautiful hardwood floors, lovely antique furniture. Wireless internet throughout the house. The beds are very comfy and I slept deeply. The towels were plentiful and very soft and fluffy! Breakfast was perfect, with some delicious muffins, fresh strawberries, and good coffee.
The hosts Michael and Karen are charming and seem to know how much interaction you want. They accomodated my changes in schedule both on arrival and departure. You can tell they are enjoying living their dream of sharing their home as a B&B. I felt, literally, as if I were in my own home. Since they do some biking, Michael was able to indicate some running itineraries for me.
You won't need your car while you're there. The inn is perfectly located diagonally from Tryon Palace. Right next door is the Chadwick cafe, which serves a perfect chicken salad sandwich for lunch.
The price was very reasonable for the accomodations, convenience, and quality.

We booked the Sail Inn for convenience - we were working at Tryon Palace - and fell in love with the inn's charm. Ideally located, the Sail Inn soon felt like home with its comfortable rooms, spotless baths, delicious breakfast and delightful host.

The small quirks of the inn's architecture only added to its charm and its walking distance to everything we needed was another plus.

We travel professionally frequently and noted that there were other larger, perhaps plusher, lodgings we might have chosen along the same street - but if we're lucky enough to return to New Bern, our first choice will be the Sail Inn

  • Liked — Its vintage charm and hospitable hosts
  • Disliked — shared bath

I recently stayed at the Sail Inn while working in New Bern. I stayed in the Beacon Room which is the second floor front bedroom. It was very spacious with a table/desk as well as a loveseat and ottoman. The bed was so comfortable with great linens. It was so quiet and peaceful! The bathroom was very spacious and clean. I had all the amenities that I needed...wireless internet access, DVD player, Ironing Board. snacks, bottled water and most importantly my own coffee maker!!! The continental breakfast was great, with fresh fruit and pastries, breakfast bars, yogurt, juices etc. and of course more freshly brewed coffee. Although I was in New Bern for work, the owners, Michael and Karen made me feel like family! Everything that historic New Bern has to offer is a short walk away from this quiet and peaceful bed and breakfast! I felt very safe walking in the neighborhood to the downtown waterfront restaurants. I have told my husband that we are going to the Sail Inn, but next time for a romantic weekend in New Bern!
