“First Colony Inn Made Our First Trip to Nags Head One to Remember!”
Reviewed November 28, 2010

Not only is this a gorgeous and comfortable inn, but the folks that run it make you feel like family. We enjoyed chatting with Roshida and Ada on more than one occasion. Both women were quick with excellent recommendations and went out of their way to make us at home (for example, when we couldn't figure out how to make the heat work, Roshida came up to our room on the third floor to show us how! (That's three flights of stairs! In the freezing cold!)

This was our first visit to the Outer Banks, and as we told Ada on our way out, it was the way we were treated at the First Colony Inn that will have us coming back!

While in Nags Head, don't miss the fish tacos at Mama Kwans (sp???) (thanks to Pete from Whalebone Surf Shop for that jewel!) Also, make sure to take the time to drive out to Hatteras Island...miles and miles of gorgeous beach and migratory birds galore!! PLUS: if you have the chance, check out the AMAZING Beachcomber Museum, home of the Nellie Myrtle Collection (and tell Chaz we said hey!) www.oldnagshead.org will let you know if it is open or not. TRUST ME, this will blow your mind if you are into beach combing....

Enjoy your time...I wish I was still there!

I had the idea of getting a bunch of friends together for a weekend-long birthday party, and looked for a location that would be distinctive, relaxed, and offer lots of possibilities, regardless of the weather. The First Colony Inn turned out to be just great, and the weather was too. The Inn is unique and full of character, rooms are very comfortable, and it has terrific gathering places (balconies, library, porches, etc.) in a great location, across the street from the beach and near everything. The staff were all helpful and friendly, the breakfasts were good, and everyone had a great time. Lots of my friends asked me how I found this place, and told me that they thought it was a gem. I agree, and am already thinking about when I can get back for a longer stay.

We arrived around 7pm and did not have a reservation. The folks were so accomodating. We had an incredible room with a wonderful bathroom. Very roomy. Bed was so comfortable. They even had refrigerator, microwave, and bottles of water for us. The beach is right across the street. The breakfast the next morning was excellent. We travel a lot and this was top of the list BY FAR!!! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!

We just returned from a weeks stay at the First Colony Inn. This has got to be the best Inn we have ever experienced. It is so quaint, clean, comfortable and right in the heart of the Outer Banks. Our room was fabulous and the staff was perfect in every way. Outside our room on the second floor was a wrap around porch with a swing and rocking chairs where we could relax and enjoy the surroundings. Easy private access to the beach across the road was great. This was our first trip to the Outer Banks and the First Colony Inn helped to make it the most perfect trip we have ever experienced. Thank you First Colony....we will definitely return any chance we have and will recommend the Inn to anyone coming to the area.

We just returned from 5 nights here, loved it. It has the warmth and charm of old Nags Head along with all the modern amenities. Close to many things, just 10 minutes from the lovely waterfront at Manteo and the Elizabethan gardens. Don't miss the 10:00 a.m. talk at the Wright Brothers Memorial. Take a fun day trip and ferry to Ocracoke. Highly recommend it, the staff is great.

If you want a place with loud parties and singles hanging off the balconies, this isn't it. And if you want a room in a stucco high-rise built in the 70s, this isn't it either. But if you want to spend a few days in a place that makes you feel like you're visiting a rich relative who just happens to own a rambling, grey-shingled mansion with wrap-around balconies, a huge grassy lawn, and the ambience of what Nags Head used to be like before it was discovered, then this is the place for you. Your room rate includes hot breakfast every morning, wine and crackers in the afternoon, and beach chairs and umbrellas. The pool is quiet and clean, the staff are friendly, and there's even a library where you can borrow books and movies for your room. Oh, and it's a block from the beach (along a private boardwalk.) How many places offer all that these days, and for very reasonable rates?

I hesitate to even write this review because I feel like First Colony is like a well-kept secret, but this is the best place in the OBX, period.

We found The First Colony Inn online for our birthday/anniversary weekend get-away. We've stayed at many B&Bs around the country and you never know how they might turn out until you get there. We were very pleased with the service. The staff were very nice. Since it was my husband's birthday and our anniversary, they sent a complimentary bottle of champagne to our room. The breakfast was excellent. It's definitely rustic and not a fancy, lavish place. You can walk to the beach (just across the street). They pay attention to detail by having everything you need. It was a last minute decision to stay there, but glad we did.
