Choosing the First Colony Inn as the venue for a birthday treat for both our daughter Judith and her husband Justin (I will not give their ages but together they total 98), was a master-stroke. They have visited the Outer Banks previously and were keen to show the area to us. The First Colony is a little gem. A truly homely welcome from Sarah on our arrival was followed by a drinks and nibbles reception, to which we contributed Judith's birthday cake which was enjoyed by all. The individuality of the bedrooms is a joy. Rocking chairs on the veranda give a relaxed atmosphere, and the beach is only a short walk away. We were very apprehensive after hurricane Irene had done her worst to the area, but the hotel seemed untroubled although the surrounding area was still being cleared of debris. An ideal situation to visit local lighthouses (limited for us by roads being washed away) and the magnificent Wright Memorial which is just a few miles north. Breakfast was excellent, both plentiful and varied. There are ample restaurants in the vicinity offering all kinds of menu. OBX is well worth visiting and if we return from the UK we would choose the First Colony inn as our base without a second thought!

Room Tip: This is not a beach side Inn and does not have what could be described as a sea view, however if you...

We enjoyed our one night at First Colony Inn: the historic atmosphere of the buildings, the friendly and very helpful staff, and the short walk across the street for an evening walk along the beach to the nearby large fishing pier. The wine and cheese after check-in in the dining room was a nice touch. We decided to eat carry-out dinner in our room so we could have a little more time to enjoy the nicely furnished and comfortable room. We walked to a nearby restaurant to pick up food, and got a couple of bottles of exotic beer from the front desk. Our room was on the first floor, so we couldn't see the ocean from our room, but we did spend some time sitting on the second floor balcony from where we could see a little bit of the ocean and the large grassy lawn of the inn that provided a nice buffer from the streets and nearby buildings. The building seemed quiet during the night and we slept very well. Paying more than $200 for a night was a little beyond my comfort zone, but I had had trouble finding a standard motel with consistantly good reviews that would book for only one night in August. So we splurged for First Colony. We also appreciated their lgbt-friendly ads.

My mother chose the Outer Banks as her ultimate destination when I offered to take her away on a mother-daughter vacation. I was quickly overwhelmed with the choices of accommodations on the banks and struggled to choose somewhere special that would add to the overall trip. The First Colony Inn seemed to suit our needs and looked to be a very nice place. It did not disappoint!!! After seeing all of the other areas on the Banks, and looking at the other accommodations offered in the area, I would definitely return to the First Colony for another visit. The rooms were just as they are pictured on the website, complete with lovely linens and antique furniture. It is an old place, so expect there to be slight signs of age, but that just seemed to add to the overall atmosphere. The air conditioner was so quiet but worked amazingly well - I've never stayed anywhere that the air conditioner was like that, so I had to mention it!! Everything was kept very clean and neat, and it was such a quiet relaxing place to stay! My only complaint would be that the bottled water in the room on the first day was never replaced and there was nowhere to purchase drinks onsite (other than alcohol). We spent just about every evening on the deck outside our room enjoying a bottle of wine and reading or chatting. The website claims that at least one breakfast dish would be hot, but there were always at least 2 hot dishes and a variety of foods to choose from: fresh fruit, breads, yogurt, dry cereals and 3 freshly made dishes (over the week, we had biscuits, croissants, waffles, sausages, quiche, scrambled eggs, muffins, bacon etc...) . The grounds were well kept and close to the beach, and the pool area was clean and private. The staff were very helpful and friendly, providing service as requested in an efficient and pleasant manner. Thank you for adding so much to making my mothers dream trip a true dream!!!

Room Tip: We stayed in room 7 and room 8, and both were beautiful.

This was our second visit to the First Colony Inn and wouldn't stay any other place in Nags Head. We love the B & B atmosphere and the quaintness of the Inn. Our room was large, exceptionally clean, quiet and comfortable. The homecooked breakfast in the morning is a great way to start the day. The beach is a short walk away and the Inn provides towels and chairs. The staff work hard and are happy to please. We plan to make an annual trip to the Outer Banks in August and will return the the First Colony Inn.

This was our first trip to the outer banks of north Carolina, and overall it was lovely. The inn is so close to the beach you can see the ocean from the deck! I felt it was clean and pretty there. My hushad and I ate our meals on the balcony. We also enjoyed some great wine during wine and cheese hour! The only odd thing was the room had an odd smell. I think maybe because it's so close to the ocean.

This historic hotel was a stone's throw from the beach and a short walk to some good restaurants. The lovely gardens were a haven from the highway and its strip of ugly buildings. Staff were effiicient and helpful. The pool was great with sun shelter and wind break.
The room was great with the fantastic veranda and chairs to watch the sun go down. Air con was the quietest I have even known! All in all a great hotel when the other choices were very bland.

Room Tip: book early
