The Blue Heron is old, but is well kept up, clean, right on the beach (okay, as close to the beach as is evironmentally correct, right behind the sand dune that protects the beach), and the rooms are of large size. Having a fridge and a microwave was very nice too. All rooms have a balcony or patio on the ocean side. We were on the second floor and we had a good view. I am sure the 3rd floor has even better views. I suspect that the first floor views aren't that good, since the sand dunes are in the way.
The lady at the front desk (owner?) was very nice and helpful. We were very pleased that we were able to check in 2.5 hours early. (All the Nag's Head lodgings I researched have a very late check-in time, 4:00 PM. What's up with that???!!!)
My girlfriend didn't like that the shower was low flow and that the temperature of the water wasn't stable. I didn't like the pillows in our room, they had no support left in them at all. They need to be thrown out and replaced!
Despite these shortcomings we really enjoyed the Blue Heron and would go back there in an instant. We picked the Blue Heron based on the Tripadvisor reviews and once again Tripadvisor came through for us!
