“We're Glad We Stayed at the Blue Heron!”
Reviewed July 13, 2012

The Blue Heron Motel is an oceanfront (not 600 steps from, 1/2 block from, and other deceptive phrases) property in Nags Head.

To start, check in with the friendly staff was uneventful. When making our reservation, we were told that since our room was on the first floor, a view of the ocean was unlikely, since there are low sand dunes between the Blue Heron and the beach. To our pleasant surprise, we could indeed see the ocean from our room.

The rooms at the Blue Heron are quite large. The beds are firm, which is to our liking. The room we checked into was very clean. Contrary to an earlier review, a box of tissues was present in the room. The bathroom was clean, and everything worked as it was supposed to. Shower flow was pretty good, and there was never a shortage of hot water.

We had no noise problems, whether due to quiet neighbors, good soundproofing, or both.

We went to the clean, lovely beach that the Blue Heron fronts, so we did not use the indoor or outdoor pools. Our friendly neighbor did, and reported that both pools were quite nice.

The Blue Heron has no restaurant, but it is across the street from the very nice South Beach Grille, and it is walking distance and/or a short-drive from many good dining choices.

There is FREE Wi-Fi at the Blue Heron, and it worked quite nicely from our room. There's plenty of free parking here, too.

The Blue Heron isn't the Ritz or the Four Seasons, but you don't pay $800/night either. It is an excellent value as compared to its competitors in Nags Head and other nearby properties in the Outer Banks.

The blue heron was everything that I had hoped to find in an outer banks hotel! Great location, clean, reasonably priced, and to beat it all it's ocean front! It's nothing fancy but it my opinion that goes right along with the whole laid back vibe that makes the outer banks so special! I have no doubt we will return to the blue heron!

We stayed in the 3rd floor honeymoon suite for 5 nights. View was great! Room was larger than an average hotel room with a large bathroom and jacuzzi tub. Water pressure was kinda low. Full kitchen had limited cookware but we didnt cook so that wasnt a problem Owners should invest in decent towels. The thin, tiny towels are really our only real complaint. Other than that, it was a satisfactory, clean place to stay right on beach and in walking distance of a few restaurants. Convenient to both north and south directions of Outer Banks.

The room was clean. The beds were extra firm! Bring everything you need- no blow dryer, shampoo, or tissues were provided! If you just want a low cost place to crash, this would be a good choice.

My main priority is always cleanliness and the Blue Heron was very clean. I knew (from photos and reviews) it was older so it was no surprise. The 3rd floor balcony/view was a huge plus for us - wonderful for evening relaxation and morning coffee. One of our beds was pretty hard but the other was good. Box springs looked kind of icky (old) but that's not a huge deal. The price, view and cleanliness all made it a good experience and we'll go back if we return to the Outer Banks.

Room Tip: Third floor if you can manage the stairs! (no elevator)

We loved the Blue Heron! It is an older motel, but is extremely clean. We went during the off-season, so it was very quiet and peaceful. The view from the room is amazing, with the ocean on one side and the sound on the other. Each room has a private balcony overlooking the ocean, and the view is best from the upper floor. There are two pools outside and one pool with a hot tub inside. I HIGHLY recommend this motel!
