What a great, FREE, place to visit with the family! The sand dunes looked impossible to climb but we all made it with no problem. Go in the morning or evening to avoid the hot afternoons. Great picture-taking opportunities!

They have a very kid-friendly small museum at the entrance, then you are out walking the dunes. Pretty lake area in the middle of them. The climb is steep, but our preschoolers did it with marginal complaining, and I managed it while carrying a one-year-old. The view from the top is pretty and is loaded with people flying kites. MAKE SURE you go early in the morning, the sand and sun gets hot quickly.

This is a great spot to introduce kids to the diversity of the dunes ecosystem. Adults and kids too can take the well-marked hike (about 1 mile - a 1 hr leisurly walk) through the dunes. Pick up a brochure at the ranger station which explains what to look for along the trail; the staff is very helpful. Some of the views are absolutely breath-taking (bring a camera). Bring a kite to fly atop the dunes where the winds pick up. Great views of the sound from the top of the dunes. Be sure to bring lots of cold water - it can get really hot out there!

It was beautiful and very nice to get away from the commercialization of the Nags Head Area. Even though it was very hot the day we went the dunes were a great place to go walking.

The sand gets VERY hot during the day so visit in the evening. You must hike up all of the dunes to get the full effect. Look for the tiny frogs hopping around, visit the visitors center to learn about them. Be sure to fly a kite at the top where the winds are perfect!
