“Go fly a kite”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 22, 2011

Make a memory and go fly a kite at the top of Jockey's Ridge State Park on the beautiful sand dunes of the Outer Banks, NC. It is unbelievable to stand at the top of the dunes like no other and look across the Outer Banks. Breathtaking. I am a Nana and it is not hard to climb to the top. Just do it in the morning or at sunset so it is not so hot. Spring and fall are the best times. Kitty Hawk Kites across the street is our favorite place to shop. Unbelievable variety of kites. We own 8 now and our granddaughter loves to fly them at Jockey's Ridge.

“A Must - Great Kite Flying for the Family and Hang Gliding, Too”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 20, 2011

If you are staying in the Nags Head area, you could visit Jockey's Ridge every day... It is FREE...

If you forget to pack a kite, Kitty Hawk Kites is across the road, south of the entrance. We bought $6.00 kites for our boys and a stunt kite and had an awesome time! Be prepared for the strong winds (tie your hair back and wear sun glasses to protect yourself from the blast of sand).

We also signed our 7 yr old son up to go hang gliding (with Kitty Hawk Kites - they have a shop in the State Park) one afternoon. It was a great deal and he had so much fun! Mom and Dad were jealous, and regretted that we hadn't signed up to go, too. (We'll go next time).

** Sign up early if you want to hang glide. They were not as busy as they are in the summer...

“A Must Visit”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 24, 2010

Our kids and us had a blast visiting the sand dunes here. The kids can have free rein running, playing, falling down the dunes. Plus they feel like they are in the middle of the desert.

I'm not sure how you can visit this in the summer time when it's so hot. But in the fall, it's a must visit and is a great place for the family to go to. Take a break from the beach or the suburban nonsense that is Nags Head and immerse yourself in nature. It's a total escape.

“So much fun”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 8, 2010

We went with our the children and had a blast, the kids run and roll in the dune and we actually got pretty good pictures at sunset time, there is a bathroom and a place to clean your feet after all that walking, but it was so worth it.

“Great place for kite flying”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 11, 2010

I went here with my husband and 10 year old daughter. At first I didn't want to go because of the climbing of the sand dunes and there's really nothing to do. But, my husband and daughter talked me into it and we bought a kite and Kitty Hawk Kites and went.
It was a strenuous walk up the dunes, but it was a really nice, cool day and the sand is so soft, you don't even mind the walk.
We put together the kite, which was very easy, and we just had to hold it up and the wind took it up and up.
My daughter loved these dunes. She would run up and down and roll all in the sand. I don't know why, but kids just love to run around on these. We saw other kids enjoying them as well.
It was very quiet and peaceful when we went, and we almost had it all to ourselves.
I would suggest stopping by just to fly a kite and feel like a kid again.
