Over the past several years, my wife and I have made it a point to visit as many wineries throughout NC as possible. But no matter how many we've managed to visit, new ones keep popping up all over the place. I heard from one source that on average, 5 new wineries come on line every 3 months or so - which is truly wonderful for North Carolina.
OK - so as of 3 years ago, we've managed to visit 47 wineries so far and yes we have our favorites (read reviews for the likes of Sanders Ridge Winery, Stony Knoll Winery, and West Bend Winery - to name a few).
But a few weeks ago we came across the Round Peak Vineyards located in Mt. Airy, NC with perhaps one of the nicest views we've ever experienced. The drive to the winery is really uneventful as views are concerned (i.e. a blend of mobile homes and older homes) - but as you pull into the Round Peak Vinyards, you are greeted by a contemporary, yet gorgeous winery building - that house both the tasting area and winery production facility. What really captures your attention is the mountain in the background (I don't know if it's called Round Peak Mountain or Skull Camp Mountain - the tasting attendant didn't make that clear).
Either way, the setting for this winery is absolutely gorgeous and will be made more so in the Fall when there is less haze and crisper skies to view. The atmosphere is immediately disarming, meaning it puts you in a very relaxing state. Inside is a very tasteful wine tasting and gift shop area.
Alright, I thought, but what about the wine? I was truly pleasantly surprised to find that I enjoyed most of their wines - in particular, the white wines. Needless to say, when all was said and done, we wound up purchasing a case of various wines (and some shirts, etc.). After the tasting, we walked around to the rear of the building just to be captivated by the vineyards and the mountain. How gorgeous it would be to have the opportunity of living right there, we all thought!
Oh....I almost forgot to mention that they started a micro-brewery also and for the moment, their brews are only sold right on the premises - but give it time. All they need now (give it time) is to include a classy little Bistro to be added on to the premises (like the awesome restaurant at the Sanders Ridge Winery in Boonville) and then you'd have a well-rounded experience.
So folks - please check out this winery. It's fairly new - but their wines taste like they've been around for awhile...with many a prize being awarded their blends. We loved it and we will be returning. I've attached some photos - and hope that Trip Advisor will approve them.
Make it a point of visiting as some of these smaller wineries can really set a grand standard - we know that Round Peak Vineyards did!
