THis unique mountain would be interesting to geologists, birders, and the family in general. There is a moderate hike to the top, which offers great views of both the Blue Ridge and the Triad area. Bring a picnic lunch, and its a very relaxing and fulfilling trip.

“A little bit of the mountains near the city......”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 4, 2012

What a wonderful location to visit! Tired of traveling to the mountains in western North Carolina (which can often take up to 4 hours to get there if you live east of Raleigh, NC)? Then just jump in the car and within an hour or two, be able to enjoy all that "mountain views" entail.

Of course, just jumping in a car and traveling to Mt. Pilot without checking out the surrounding area, would be a waste of an opportunity. By all means, make sure to visit surrounding historic places like Mt. Airy, Dobson, Boonville, and a few other gorgeous towns, prior to going to Mt. Pilot. We always make Mt. Pilot our last stop - putting the icing on the proverbial cake.

Mt. Pilot is around 1500 feet above seat level and it sticks out big time - you can see it for miles around. It features a superb drive all the way around and to the top of the mountain right next to the actual Pilot Mt. (which in itself is inaccessible). The State did a great job if putting in various hiking trails, look-out points, and general rest areas. There are so many vantage points that by all means, bring a camera or two to take in the sights. And yes, there are restrooms at the top (and towards the bottom when you first drive in - by the Ranger station).

Keep in mind that Pilot Mt. is now a State Park and as such, be sure to follow the guidelines that you would when visiting a park (no alcohol or firearms).

We always enjoy our visits there and since we live in the Raleigh area, it takes us only 1 3/4 hours to get there (as opposed to 4 hours to see the Blue Ridge Parkway). We've posted some photos here (hope the Trip Advisor publishes them with this review).

Enjoy!

The view is beautiful. The hikes are great. Also go to the towns of Pilot Mountain and Mount Airy on your visit. You may just see Andy and Barney!

“Not to be missed”

Wow, what a scenic park this is! We were staying in Mt. Airy for the evening and arrived early enough to spend a few hours at Pilot Mountain State Park and we are so glad we did.

This was the perfect time of year to be there. I was there a week earlier, on a Saturday, and it was absolutely packed to the gills with about an hour wait to get to the top of the parking lot where the trails start. A week later, and on a Friday morning, it was a ghost town with only ONE car in the parking lot!

The hike around Pilot Mountain is a must. It's so scenic and beautiful. I must have shot 100 photos walking around there and wish I would have shot 100 more. The trails are both easy and hard, depending on which way you go and which trail you're on. Any skill level will be challenged here. Well, not climbers, because they don't allow climbing on the actual Pilot Mountain, like Devil's Tower does, but the trails are excellent anyway. There is a super scenic trail on the other side of the parking lot that my wife and I spent a couple of hours on, it's quite a challenge so be prepared.

I highly recommend seeing this beautiful area.

We drove to the top and hiked down a way and back up. We had a beautiful fall day so the views were great.
