“Cheese Biscuits to die for”
Reviewed September 4, 2013

I chose the country buffet and ordered the Fried Chicken Breast as my meat. You can get the buffet and then order from a selection of meats that they bring out a serving to you. There were no meats on the buffet. The buffet is a country buffet (Mashed Potatoes and Gravy, Mac & Cheese, Pasta Salad, Carrot Salad, Green Beans, etc.) plus their salad bar. They made Cheese Biscuits similar to Red Lobster - only better. Plus there was Peach Cobbler and Banana Pudding on the buffet line. I really enjoyed the mashed potatoes and the melt in your mouth Cheese Biscuits.

The decor was plastered with all sorts of signs, toy cars, photos and funny sayings. They have a huge assortment (100+) of candy. This family style restaurant was somewhat busy around 2:00 PM on Tuesday afternoon.

The best part of Abele's is by far the price. Around $7 for some really good home cooking. I drove right pass a Wendy's, McDonald's, and Arby's.

I will definitely stop and eat here when I am back in the Morganton area.

“Salad was good, but rest was lacking.......”
Reviewed July 8, 2013

It would appear that all of the locals go here, but the food wasn't that great - I can't imagine what the other restaurants are like, if this is their first choice!

Atmosphere feels closed in and "trapped." Literally, you enter through a gate, the floor space is u-shaped and you exit through the cash register. The "trinkets" hanging on the ceiling and walls add to the claustrophobic atmosphere.

Menu was overwhelming - but when you really looked at it, it was just variations of toppings for the same meats.

We had the food bar (veggies, soup and salad), hamburger steak and pork chop.

I don't think I would return here, until after I had tried all the other restaurants in town.

“Great home cooking buffet and priced very reasonably”
Reviewed July 8, 2013

My wife and I look forward to dining at this buffet restaurant every year that we attend a local blue grass festival in Morganton NC. Each year the food lives up to our expectations. The vegetable soup is the best that I have ever eaten. Although there are no meat items on the buffet line you can order a meat item if you desire. The vegetables are "home-cooked". The salad and fruit bars are outstanding. There are at least two strictly dessert items on the bar (usually cobblers or pineapple upside down cake). The pineapple upside down cake is the very best that I have ever eaten. Enough said - try it. You will not be disappointed.

“Good!!”

This used to be "Shoney's" and we still call it that. Good food, interesting decor and good service.
