Review of Duke's Grill

Duke's is small and does not look like much from the outside, but the burgers are worth the trip! Try your cheeseburger all the way...chili, slaw, onions, and ask for plenty of napkins. The sweet tea is some of the best in Monroe, and the shaved ice makes it even better. Cell phones are off limits in the small restaurant, but this is clearly posted. Actually, it's nice to escape from your cell phone, and it's too cozy of an area to be distracted by someone's cell phone conversation.

Saw this restaurant on a TV show called Burger-land. Supposedly Duke's Grill has one of the best burgers in the Charlotte area. Guess someone knew what they were talking about because this small unassuming place serves up one of the best. It's full of locals because everyone that came in seemed to be on a first name basis. Our service was excellent and the food was delish. I should not have gone for the double patty because one is enough. The toppings are fresh and the bun held everything together. A must stop if you are looking for a good burger. Good on the wallet too.

Duke's has been around for decades and was always a spot when we were in high school. The food is hand crafted, made to order, so it's always fresh and tastes great. I try to get in a visit whenever I get up that way. The best thing thus far is the cheeseburger all the way. The only thing missing from the menu is milk shakes, but I think that has more to do with the labor involved than anything else. As for the use of cell phones, there's a sign - clearly visible - when you walk through the door. Turn 'em off. It's only for the duration of your meal, and if you can't go that long without taking a break to enjoy one of the hidden jewels of Monroe, well, maybe you really do need to be eating elsewhere. Remember, that place is TINY (NOT SMALL), so we all gotta get along. Dukes' and Juds (another Monroe restaurant) have been in Dennis' family for some time and he's done a phenomenal job carrying on the fine tradition.

If you don’t know better you might drive right past Duke's and miss a chance for an excellent breakfast or lunch. Duke's even started staying open for dinner not to long ago. The young ladies that wait on you are all super friendly and super efficient. I can’t get two swallows out of my diet Pepsi (designated by the "X" drawn on my Styrofoam cup) before they come and pour me a refill. Their burgers are made fresh to order and very juicy. Dennis mans the grill and manages the endless stream of orders with military precision. Come hungry if you order a double burger and be prepared, if you add bacon on your burger you will get a full size breakfast order (3-4 big slices). Their dogs are also very good and the Chuck wagon sandwich as well. I like a fried baloney sandwich sometimes. Be warned, no cell phones are allowed in Duke's Grill so leave your cell phone in the car! You don’t want to make Dennis mad.

After hearing about this place from several other folks that live 25 miles away... we decided it was time to give it a try...
Good News... it was worth the trip... Health Dept. score was 101.5! and it looked like it... even though the place has been there for 40+ years!
Small... tables shoved in everywhere possible... but lots of fun.
Fabulous Service staff.... Very helpful. Ordered my burger med. rare. and she smiled and told me when it came out it was a 'mistake'. (NC must serve burgers well done)
Great value... and best of all ... terrific Burgers. At least 5 different signs to 'turn off your cell phone'... not sure why... but it was impressed upon us for sure... Anxious to go back for Breakfast.
