South 21, located on Independence Blvd (Highway 74) is a Matthews and Charlotte tradition. You'll think you've arrived at a classic '50s diner.
If you're not watching your weight or cholesterol, this is a great place to just enjoy simple foods. The "Super Boy" hamburger dates back many years, and is featured in a weekly special. Our family has enjoyed the Fish-o-Burger, or the trout dinner - crisply-fried trout, tartar sauce, bun, tart coleslaw, and loads of french fries. For a splurge, try the onion rings - but be sure to bring someone to share them with. And drinks are served with that wonderful "chewy ice" instead of ice cube chunks or crescents - plus refills are free.
There's often a crowd, but there is some outdoor dining available. Just watching the traffic whiz by on Independence Blvd. is worth a front-row seat at the bar seats.
