“Family friendly has never been so fun!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 26, 2013 via mobile

My mom went ahead and booked the five mile rafting trip with Blue Heron for our family trip up to the mountains this Memorial Day weekend. I was a little nervous because I had never been whitewater rafting before, but it turned out to be the highlight of my weekend!

My group was inexperienced, and we were all a little nervous about possibly being rocked off the boat, so to speak. My nerves were calmed as soon we talked with our guide, Kaye, who was very sweet, funny and reassuring.

For those who are interested, there is an informative video followed by an engaging information session before you even put on a life jacket. I was pleased with their effort- I truly felt safety was a main priority and I felt much better about the dangers of rafting after being a part of this session.

When we got on the water, Kaye began by explaining the river a little to us, and also by providing some interesting history of the surrounding area. The rapids were very exciting (nobody fell overboard but we did try pushing my little brother into the water!) and the scenery, history, and our knowledgeable guide made it quite the sweet deal!

I would definitely raft with this company again, and I would also strongly recommend this river and company to anyone looking for a family friendly, exciting trip out doors. Be prepared to get wet!

“Excellent from start to finish”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 26, 2013

We called about 9am on a Sunday and asked if they had a morning rafting session that same day. Sandy politely answered that their session for that day left at 2pm. That didn't fit into our travel plans so she quickly offered that if I could be there by 10 ( we were 30 minutes away in Asheville) that she could maybe throw a trip together. She called me back about 5 minutes later and she had a guide ready to go and meet us. When we arrived she was pulling in the lot. She quickly greeted us and gave us EVERYTHING that we would need to survive rafting. Their rates are very reasonable and included everything from special wet-suit socks to a wet-suit, sweat shirts etc... She even offered to tie string around my glasses so I wouldn't lose them. They had hot showers and nice facilities for changing clothes and warming up after the trip. They were very accommodating. We were a very spontaneous group (two couples) and were super excited that they could fit us in. The views were beautiful and our guide - Kim, was very nice. Sandy took great pictures of our group and the price to purchase a CD was very affordable. We were very glad that they were so gracious and accommodating and fit us in around our schedule. They told us that they strive to be flexible and accommodating whenever possible. We could only fit in a half day ride but we would definitely come back and do a full day if given the opportunity. We had a great experience and definitely recommend this trip for anyone interested in trying whitewater rafting!

So glad we were able to help get you on the river. We try to be flexible and work with folks because we love this old river and these old mountains and want to share that with as many people as possible. And it's one of the advantages of being a small company. We have the gear. The owners and guides live nearby. If we can figure out a way we'll get on the river with you every chance we get. Thanks again for rafting with us.

“A great time was had by all!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 25, 2013

We had a great time rafting with Blue Heron. Everyone was really nice. Sandy was a great guide. Frank took such good photos of us rafting that we ended up buying the photos afterwards. They had a lot of clothes available for use on the rafting trip. The safety video was short and very informative. The facilities were nice and clean. There were a lot of nice t-shirts and hats for sale, too. We typically don't buy stuff like that but we ended up buying several items.

We're very glad you came rafting with us and we're even more glad that you had a good time. Even though we're a small, locally owned company we have decades of experience in the whitewater rafting world and strive to provide a quality experience on and off the water. Couldn't / wouldn't do it any other way. Thanks again.

“Teachers from Tampa”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 10, 2013

We visited Blue Heron Whitewater Rafting on March 10, 2013. We had Sandy as our tour guide and Fritz as our own personal photographer. This was our first time ever whitewater rafting. Sandy made us comfortable, went over safety and tips, and even threw in a geology lesson. The business thought of everything to make the experience amazing, even down to bags in the bathroom for wet clothes! The experience was better than we could have imagined. The weather and water was in the 50's, and for Floridians that's freezing, but no worries Blue Heron provided wetsuits, fleece, jackets, water proof socks, tougher than windbreaker jackets, ALL FREE OF CHARGE! The scenery was breathtaking in the water and the rapids were thrilling. We highly recommend the personal touch that Sandy and Fritz provide at Blue Heron. If you are near the Asheville area you really need to check them out! The price is more than fair on a teachers salary.

Thanks for coming down the river with us. And for taking the time to write a review. We really appreciate it. And you didn't have to be from Florida to think March was freezing. People around here have been calling this March Marchuary. But it's almost seventy degrees today and birds are chirpen and flowers are bloomen. Time to shed the wetsuits. (But we're keeping them close at hand.)

“Best Whitewater Rafting Experience Yet!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 27, 2013

I have been on a few whitewater rafting excursions and this tops them all!! I went with my husband, brother and sister in law and we had the entire rafting trip on the French Broad all to ourselves. It was the first time my brother and his wife had ever been rafting and now they are hooked. Our guide, Sandy, was extremely nice and knowledgeable about not only rafting but the area, history and local wildlife. We went on a weekday at the end of October and were provided cold weather gear free of charge! We were impressed by the entire operation from start to finish. And the picnic location and food were awesome! Sandy even took some really great pictures of us and the trip for us. We will be back!

Thanks for rafting with us. October is certainly a beautiful time of the year to be on the river and so is spring. Right now the wildflowers are starting to bloom and the trees are budding out with the red buds of the maples making the hills almost as red as October. Then there's the deep, rich greens of summer and the crisp air and hot chocolate of winter. Every season has it's own river charm.
