I have been on a few whitewater rafting excursions and this tops them all!! I went with my husband, brother and sister in law and we had the entire rafting trip on the French Broad all to ourselves. It was the first time my brother and his wife had ever been rafting and now they are hooked. Our guide, Sandy, was extremely nice and knowledgeable about not only rafting but the area, history and local wildlife. We went on a weekday at the end of October and were provided cold weather gear free of charge! We were impressed by the entire operation from start to finish. And the picnic location and food were awesome! Sandy even took some really great pictures of us and the trip for us. We will be back!

Thanks for rafting with us. October is certainly a beautiful time of the year to be on the river and so is spring. Right now the wildflowers are starting to bloom and the trees are budding out with the red buds of the maples making the hills almost as red as October. Then there's the deep, rich greens of summer and the crisp air and hot chocolate of winter. Every season has it's own river charm.

We used Blue Heron for a family excursion and it was such a hit! The guides were so funny and excellent hosts. It was cold, but they managed to keep us warm (they even got a few brave soldiers to jump in the water. Very fun trip and we can't wait to return!

Thanks for rafting with us in November! Brave souls, but you can pretty much go rafting on the French Broad in almost any weather if you've got the right clothing. The 2013 season is getting started and things are warming up. Or you can wait til December and be our first December trip. We'll bring the egg nog.

This company knows how to take care of their patrons! We were given booties, flannel shirts, wet suits...basically anything we needed to be comfortable for our Fall rafting experience. Our guide made sure we were informed and as active in the rafting experience as we were comfortable with. Not only was the river experience fun & exciting, but our guide was very informative about the environment & history surrounding us. They were VERY accomodating!
THANKS Blue Heron Owners!

Glad you had a good trip and stayed warm. As they say: "there's no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing". We want everyone to be warm and happy because if you're not happy, we're not happy.
Thanks for your comments and for rafting with us. Hope to see you next year, or sooner. We'll go anytime you want (mostly).

My wife and I have gone whitewater rafting a dozen or so times in the last few years, and Blue Heron is far and away the best experience we've had to date. Super friendly and helpful guides with a lot of local knowledge and a willingness to engage with you, very reasonably priced (and they don't charge for gear rental, which was a rare and welcome surpise from many other places), and the river was beautiful and teeming with wildlife (we were within 10 yards of a bald eagle at one point). We also had the river to ourselves when we went (a cold-ish Sunday), so I imagine overcrowding isnt a problem most of the time. I would absolutely recommend Blue Heron to anyone thinking about doing whitewater rafting in western NC--we will definately be back soon!

Isn't it great to see bald eagles return to the French Broad River? They've only been back a few years and it's always a thrill to see one in a tree or overhead, scanning the river for fish.
Having the right clothing on a cool day can make all the difference, and since not many people have their own wetsuits, neoprene socks, and neoprene gloves, we decided that we would have that kind of gear available free of charge (splash jackets and pants too for the less cool but still chilly days). We do this because a warm guest is a happy guest, and we want everybody to be happy.
Thanks for rafting with us and thanks for taking time to write a review. Hope to see you soon.

This was a perfect family trip, thanks Blue Heron! Sandy and Dana were our guides and took great personal care of us, from taking care of our worries about the cold (it was 45 degrees that morning but their top-notch gear had us all feeling snug and warm) to our special vegan meal request (delicious) to offering different rafting options including personal ducks. We saw other tours along the way that looked more chaotic and didn't have as nice a gear as us. The facility is really nice too - after some exciting rafting we had warm showers and dry clothes.

Thanks for rafting with us. Nothing feels quite as nice as a warm shower and dry clothes after a great time on the water.
