“Loved the place!”
Reviewed July 6, 2008

This is like visiting some old friends! I was very skeptical when I made my reservations for the Skyline, I am a bit of a hotel snob. I found it on Trip Advisor, and wasn't really sure. I was pleasently surprised when we arrived at the room, it was very clean and comfortable, with a brand new bathroom. The owners were very nice people that made you feel welcome. I will stay again!

  • Liked — The friendly owners and other guests
  • Disliked — The lack of direction upon checking in, there isnt and office for info.

We stayed at the Skyline for several nights and would have checked out earlier, but it was Labor Day weekend and all other spots were booked. When you drive to the back to park you can tell with the cigarette butts everywhere and the ripped up parking area, that the exterior has been ignored. Well some of the interior too. The inside hall carpet is very dingy and the decor minimal to shabby. The ashtrays on the porch looked like they had not been emptied in a week. We stayed in one of the balcony rooms and it seemed OK until we tried to take a shower. Cold to hot and cold again and one day not working at all. I showered once, barely able to get the soap out of my hair, and my husband twice as he hates cold showers. Mike, the owner is a decent guy and seems to be trying to bring it up from previous sad years of neglect, but still charging way too much for the quality. Food was passable, but the Back Porch Cafe a couple miles down the road was great. Should have eaten all our meals there. The best thing to say is they have a very good wine selection in the store downstairs.

  • Liked — location by the Blue Ridge Parkway and convenience
  • Disliked — poor showers, shabbiness of interiors and restaurant, mediocre food

We booked two rooms at this hotel and upon arrival the view is just as beautiful as described - you could not ask for better scenery. You go into the beer/wine store to check in and that went quickly. Our side by side rooms were on the third floor which was easily accessible from the upper parking. However, upon entering the hotel all the good things dissappear - the carpet in the hallway is filthy. As opposed to the pictures posted about this hotel by another traveler, our rooms had not seen a single update in probably 25 years. The walls are dark panelling and the furniture/bedspreads/decorations have spent many, many years in the rooms - nothing appears to have changed from the early 70's. The single room we booked had a bad smell when the air conditioner (window unit) was cut on. The tub faucet in the double room had a constant drip and in the single room your knees fit up under the sink while sitting on the toilet. After only a few minutes of discussion, we all decided to check-out, cut our losses, and found a great place just down the road. If you decide to stay here you may want to request one of the front balcony rooms - it seems they might be a little nicer.

Skyline: they have great Jamaican jerk chicken wings and chicken and cheese quesidillas and other “bar” foods for lunch along with a wide variety of beers. But at night, ask Bill or Toby what’s on special…they are very good cooks… (London Broil, NY Strip, Chicken, etc). Rebecca and I often order a side salad and split the entrée (which comes with one salad) as it is portioned large enough for the both of us. The service is sometimes slow, (especially on a busy night) so make sure you are in no big hurry when you get there and take your time. I think it is part of the mountain charm (go check out the view while your food is prepared) and a characteristic of a place “where time stands still” sometimes. Corner the owner, Mike Thrift, and ask him to give you the nickel tour (where the moonshine was kept, etc). He loves that. The Skyline Village Inn was built on a moonshine foundation! Rebecca and I know him well and we have great respect for him. We often order the nightly “special” to-go and eat-in at the Sugarshack. Lots of times there is live music. I think it is must stop when up in or around Marion NC.

We had stayed at the Skyline before and found it to be very hospitable with great views and good food.

We were looking for a place to go for New Year's and received a mailing from the Skyline stating they were having a Murder Mystery Party and a New Year's Party the same weekend. The price was right and we had been wanting to try out a murder mystery party so we booked a reservation.

We had a ball!. It was a lively group. The Murder Mystery was well organized. They had a "Casino Night " where they had gaming tables etc set up as the setting for the Murder Mystery was the Skyline Casino in "Spruce Vegas". Well what is a vegas casino night without an Elvis Impersonator? They had "Elvis" for entertainment at the murder mystery and again the following night at the New Year's Party. It was a fabulous weekend. Hope to do it again next year.

Found their site on Google and thought it would be a cool stopover on our Fall ride. We stayed on a Saturday night. They had live music on their deck and fabulous ribs and ribeyes they cooked on a grill. They also had the best beer selection I've seen anywhere let alone the middle of nowhere in a dry county!

The owner took us for a tour of a cavern they found where the original builder had a moonshine still. The rooms were rustic and clean. They had wood paneling and floors throughout the building.

We found they even have a beautiful new lounge on the second floor for private parties and meetings.

We will go back next year. Great place to stay while doing area loop rides or while riding through.

We found the Cavern Tavern on the web and thought it sounded like a fantastic place to take some friends for lunch. The view from the outdoor deck was indeed beautiful.

BUT, from the moment we arrived (Saturday August 5th, 2006), it appeared that the place wasn't really expecting or prepared to have any customers.

I got a bad feeling when we asked if they were serving lunch and the person responded in a way that gave the impression that we were imposing on them. The physical surroundings also did not look like they were really expecting anyone (this despite the fact we were there during the open hours posted on their door). The restaurant area and the area around the steps up to the outdoor deck looked kind of disheveled and dirty.

They scrambled around and sent out a server with menus and took our order. The server seemed not to know what was usually good, what people usually ordered, and she said they were out of some menu items. We ordered barbecue sandwiches and cole slaw and hot dogs and grilled cheese for the children.

When the food came a LONG while later, the BBQ appeared to be something that had been salvaged from the freezer. It was in dry chunks: hard, chewy, and tasteless, and tossed on a bun. We asked for sauce, and again felt that this request sent the waitress scrambling to find some.

The cole slaw was slimy and off tasting. My children's very simple meals of hot dogs and grilled cheese sandwiches were disgusting -- the hot dog served on folded white bread.

I basically had to leave my entire lunch uneaten -- it was so gross.

The feeling throughout was that they were scrambling to provide food they weren't really prepared to serve.

Because we were with friends and didn't want to make a scene, we didn't lodge a complaint that day. But let this be a warning to others: steer clear of this place until they get their act together.
