Must do in northwest NC. Be aware high winds could close top access. When that happens, they have a discounted admission. Can see us going back just to experience it again.

It’s $20/pp to get in as others have griped about. But it’s clear what your money buys. Everything is well maintained and there is good staffing at all places that need it. Multiple staff directing traffic at the entrance and the top. Nothing run down or poorly maintained. That takes money and since it’s privately run, that’s what we pay for. I think it’s worth it.

Only complaint is the exhibits in the nature museum are dated and appear not to have been updated since it opened in 1990. But we were there for the views and the bridge and they were excellent.

We went during the only good weather day of a holiday weekend so it was crowded. Took about 10 minutes to get through the entrance gate and the parking lot at the top was full. When this happens they have staff to hold back the traffic and only let up cars as parking spaces come open. This keeps the top from being too crowded and keeps parking from being frustrating. Our wait here was also about 10 minutes. If you you don’t want to wait in that line you can park in the lower lot and walk up.

The swinging bridge lived up to its billing. Wasn’t real windy when we were there so didn’t sway too much. Once over the bridge it’s a rock-hop on the other side so if you aren’t in reasonable shape and balance you can simply turn around and go back. Was crowded on the other side but not unreasonably so.

In the animal habitat the otters were most accessible and entertaining

The views from this area are just amazing. I can not see how anyone could say there is no God once they see this. Just amazing.

Great place to visit, it was cold and too windy but the nice part is special music was produced when the wind blew through the swinging bridge bars.

This was my second time visiting Grandfather Mountain. The swing bridge is just as adventurous as it was last time. The hiking trails are very well kept. My father & I had a great hike and enjoyed the view. The only negative is that it’s $20 per person just to get into the park.

Thank you for this great review. I am glad you enjoyed your hike.

As for our prices, you may be interested to know that we're a nonprofit organization, with a mission of inspiring conservation of the natural world. As such, all of our funding is derived from admission, souvenir sales, food and beverage sales, and donations, and every single dollar goes right back into maintaining and preserving the mountain for future generations. A guided CD tour leads you in your car to the almost-top of the mountain. Walk across the swinging bridge (does not really swing like you may think, though) for great views. There are also trails if you want to do real hiking. Back down the mountain, there is a small museum and a natural habitat for animals (otter, bear, eagle, cougar, and elk). It was a nice visit for the whole family.

Well worth the price of admission. A guided audio tour (CD or USB drive) helps you identify where you are in the park and provides a history of Grandfather Mountain. The animals are fun to watch. The fudge is delicious and oh the view! Absolutely perfect day. We will be back to hike in the very near future!

Twenty dollars per person proved to be a bargain. The bridge and walk up the boulders to the top was very exhilarating. We were told it was 42 degrees with a wind chill near freezing. It was windy enough that you needed to hold onto your cap. We also saw the nature area featuring black bear, otters, eagles and cougars. It also offered some great views on the drive up.

Simply beautiful at the top. We decided to stop here on our way up to our cabin outside W. Jefferson. Conveniently located right off of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Although we did no hiking, there seems to be trails throughout the park. When we arrived at the visitor center, we took the short walk up the stairs and crossed the swinging bridge to the top. Views are amazing and well worth the trip up. A little expensive at $20 pp. We sat there for a while and admired the beauty we couldn't get enough of. We had a bright, sunny clear day. Temps did drop, but we all had light jackets the day we went (10/19).
