Owner description: Grandfather Mountain’s pristine scenery and sweeping vistas rejuvenate mind and spirit. At an elevation of 5,946 feet, Grandfather is recognized as one of the world’s most diverse nature preserves. Be exhilarated by the altitude and panoramic views from the Mile High Swinging Bridge; stand eye-to-eye with bears, cougars and otters in natural habitats. Dine in the restaurant or find a scenic picnic spot, browse the nature museum, wander the trails, go behind the scenes of the animal habitats, visit with knowledgeable naturalists, and stop for a treat at the fudge shop. Fill your day with family memories at place where wonders never cease.

“Outstanding Natural Attraction”
Reviewed April 28, 2013

We were fortunate to visit Grandfather Mountain on a clear day. The views are excellent. The visitor center is well planned and has ample information on the local geology, flora and fuana. We were a little disappointed there were no bald eagles in that habitat, as workers were renovating it. But, we got to see a bear having some kibble.
We didn't go out on the swinging bridge, thanks to a child screaming her head off on the steep steps leading to it. We detoured into the gift shop, hoping the screaming would cease, but it didn't. Some parents are extremely inconsiderate of others, unfortunately.
The adult admission price is $18, which seems a tad pricey for a park.

“World Class Attraction”
Reviewed April 26, 2013

Grandfather Mountain is a world class attraction. There is a lot of history, geography, biology and just plain fun to be experienced with a visit. The obvious attraction is the mile-high swinging bridge, which is actually one mile above sea level, though only about 80 feet from the ground underneath it. A CD delivered at the entrance gate provides an interesting narrative for the drive to the top and back down. (Recycle the CD at the exit for others to enjoy.) Live animal exhibits with bears, deer, otters, cougars and eagles command attention. Take a picnic and enjoy the day there with the family, but come early on weekends and holidays, or the wait will be a long one.

“What a View”
Reviewed April 24, 2013

A must-see attraction just a mile or so off the lovely Blue Ridge Parkway in the mountains of NC. The Park has an amazing history, and scenery is spectacular. With each admission, you get a CD to listen to as you drive up the mountain that describes the history, geography, etc. The swinging/singing bridge was a highlight, as was the center building with little museum, short nature flicks, a nice gift shop, and cafe. Leave room for a walk aroung the wildlife area, and see, in their natural habitate, bears, otters, deer and soon eagles in a new enclosure. And if you like fudge ... they make it on sight (you can observe that) and have several delicious flavors for purchase. Free samples, and they ship it, too!

“Great way to see good view”
Reviewed April 20, 2013 via mobile

I have been to GM several times. I enjoy hiking and seeing the mini zoo of rescue animals. The swinging bridge is excellent. If you are going to go numerous times or have many people, buy a season pass. Today, my husband and I did the GM profile trail. It is 3.1 miles and goes up the backside of GM and is free. Parking is very limited off of highway 105 The main entrance to GM is off of 221. My review is of the profil trail. After you leave the parking lot you will go about a half of a mile along a stream. Expect to cross the stream multiple times up the mountain. The first mile is not difficult. You start ascending after that and the trail is easy from a footing perspective but you will start to gain elevation. You will continue like this till the profile outlook somewhere around 2 miles. At 2.5 miles ( there is a marker) the trail is rocky and you have to scramble the rest of the way, Today was very windy and cold and there were numerous slick spots (ice). It was so cold up top that our water froze in the tube of our camel back. There is much to see on the profil trail unless you go further up to Calloway peak. If you are a good hiker the trip will take about 3 hours.

“Beautiful views . . . but for $18 per person the trails should be open past 4pm”
Reviewed April 17, 2013 via mobile

It's worth the trip up the mountain to enjoy the spectacular views from the swinging bridge. The animal sanctuary is like a mini zoo with otters, deer, black bear, eagle, cougar. We found it quite entertaining. We also loved the trails . . . until we realized that we had to be back to our car by 4pm. With several hours of sunlight left in the day, we wish we had more time to enjoy the trails . . . especially after paying $36 to get in.
