Quinta do Monteverde
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed July 23, 2013

We spend a few days at Quinta do Monteverde, from time to time, and it had been a while. Everytime we go there, there is something new, planned by our dear and restless hosts Fátima and Zé to enhance the marvellous comfort and quiet of the place. This time, it was the renewed dining room, installed in the centuries old "lagar" (wine or olive press). The decoration is impressive, in the line of the main house's elegant but comfortable furniture, and the food was really excellent, up to high standards of the portuguese northern cuisine.

I guess the only thing that has remained the same along these years is the wonderful hospitality of the couple. Definitely a must for anyone wanting to enjoy the living of a family "solar" and forget about *all* the problems of life. For those happy with *almost*, they do have Internet ...
In that case, I'd surf by the swimming pool :-)

We try to visit this most delightful spot every year, usually with friends or family members. Writing an adequate review becomes harder each year, as the superlatives are already all used up. There are several reasons why we like this destination so much. The owners and hosts, Fatima and José Mendonça are lovely people and try extremely hard for all their guests to feel comfortable and at home. The setting suits us - the North of Portugal is, in our view, the best part of the country and the Quinta is situated within a village, about a mile from the sea and 300 yds from a delicious bakery. The Quinta itself is very secure, with electronic gates and completely walled, so the children can roam around very safely. The pool is always very well kept, as is the tennis court, and the grounds are beautiful to walk round, especially in the early morning or late evening.
José and Fatima have done a very successful job of preserving their family home's history while moving firmly and effectively into the 21st century. The wifi, for example has just recently been upgraded and is now very reliable all over the property.
The breakfasts, for those of us with a gourmand streak, are the stuff of dreams - fresh baking, beautiful breads, homemade jams, fresh fruit, hot fresh coffee. I must stop. Already I am suffering saudades (a particularly Portuguese form of missing someone or somewhere). The only cure is to return next year.

Room Tip: They're all good.

Don't lose heart as you approach the Quinta through the usual sprawl of red tiled holiday homes. Once the mighty doors through the Cyclopean walls close behind you, you are in another world. The mood is tranquil. Fatima, her husband and Elizabeth are delightful. Once a week Fatima cooks an excellent dinner. The grounds are extensive enough to hide a swimming pool and a tennis court, Amoroso nearby has a beautiful beach. The breakfast in the handsome old winery is top rate .... and the linen is embroidered with the ducal family arms!

My only quibble is that the beds were a little hard.

Room Tip: Rooms in the house have genuine period furniture. The 'cottages' are a row of suites taste...

We stayed at the Quinta do Monteverde for 4 days in July 2012. The quinta itself is a hidden gem (in the literal meaning of the words; tucked away behind high walls in a small township hit by urban sprawl) with a large and lush garden. The main building and surrounding houses have been wonderfully restored and provides a nice setting for a very relaxing stay.

The kids enjoyed the pool and adjacent tennis court and the garden is large enough to not interfere or disturb other guests. The facilities provided in the cottages proved perfect for our use; we did not cook ourselves but the necessary utensils are present for preparing lunch/sandwiches/tea & coffee/fruit etc., and the kitchen area was cleaned spotless every day. The beds provided in the cottages are a bit to the small side (probably to be expected for Nothern Europeans), and one of the beds is a sofa bed, hence less comfortable. Next time we will settle for an apartment.

Our hosts organised a nice dinner one of the evenings at Quinta do Monteverde. While this may not necessarily be economically favourable - the seaside restaurants in the village are inexpensive compared to more tourist-ridden regions of Portgual, although you have to walk quite a bit from the quinta - we and especially the kids enjoyed the dinner as an example of fine dining with silver cutlery, crystal glasses and fine table cloths etc., yet in a relaxed and tranquil atmosphere

There is no way I can describe honestly the place, anything I say is not enought. The place is amazing as is the hostess, Fatima. Everything is perfect to the details, from the premises to the breakfast, as good and complete as anyone could desire. Just go, no regreats here.

This lovely family home is the epitome of the best of what Portugal has to offer in the way of comfort, welcome, amenities and relaxation. It is a walled mansion house and estate, run by a Portuguese couple, who are the owners. It is within a vilage (Castelo do Neiva) just a mile inland from the coast in the North of Portugal, about 15 mins drive south of Viana do Castelo - less than an hour's drive from Porto. The accommodation is very comfortable, the breakfasts are top quality and the hospitality is wonderful - we just keep going back, as we cannot imagine finding anywhere better. Swimming pool, tennis court, bikes, absolutely safe for chidlren.

Room Tip: Go for one of the cottages - each one sleeps 2 (+ 2 children if required) - independent but just 1 m...

We have just returned from a week's family holiday in the Terrace House at QdM. The house was nicely secluded from other properties on the estate but still enjoyed all the amenities of the property - pool, excellent breakfast, complimentary tennis and the outstanding hospitality of Fatima and Jose. The terrace house does not have a sea view. A particular highlight of our stay was an evening meal prepared by Fatima which allowed us to mingle with other guests and enjoy food more imaginative than provided at many Portugese restuarants. Free wifi is available. Porto is about 45 mins drive or 90 mins by train from Viana do Castello (possibly advisable to avoid the Porto traffic and the terminus is right by the Porto Cathedral). Viana itself is 15 mins drive north and a very attractive town on the coast. Good beaches, sparsely populated, run north and south.
Good trips out include to the stunning national park of Penedes, about 60 mins away, and along the coast road to Valenca and Moncao on the Spanisg border. Also worth going to Guimaraes - don't miss the Ducal Palace which gets snooty reviews in some guidebooks but has been superbly restored.
My only minor quiblle with QdM is that there is no guest information pack in the property. Fatima happily provides all you could wish to know, but after a while we started to feel we were imposing. In summary - beatiful and well appointed in a very attraactive part of northern Portugal.

Room Tip: The suite in the main house is stunning.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
This manor house was built in the 16th and 17th centuries by the Cunha Lobo Barbosa and Sottomayor family just 1 km from the sea. In 1820, the Genoese Judge Luigi Vital Monteverdi married the owner of the estate and the house became to be known as Quinta do Monteverde. The manor house was completely renovated but the interior retains the touch of the seventeen hundreds. Quinta de Monteverde is a walled estate between the hills and the sea and close to the river mouth. In Castelo do Neiva, the sandy beach rolls on and on; sand dunes and unspoilt stretches lend a wonderful sense of isolation to the surroundings. ... more   less
