We didn't stay at the Lake Lure Inn and Spa but went for brunch on our way out of town. The doorman was smacking gum and playing on his iPhone as we entered. I had to speak to him first before he even looked up to acknowledge our arrival. There was a wait for a table and there weren't many people ahead of us. We sat for a while before we were greeted by our server and when she did arrive, she looked like she had just rolled in from a night of heavy drinking (which seemed to be the theme among the serve staff). There was a great variety of food at the buffet and it wasn't extraordinary....just your average breakfast. On a positive note, the omelets were fantastic and the omelet chef was friendly and cheerful. Overall, the place seemed dirty (there was a brown substance on the wall by my chair that seemed to be there a long time) and just tired. And I agree with other reviewers.....the old portraits were just creepy. If you don't mind ho-hum food, this is your place for brunch - otherwise, find another place as there are many historical locations in this area with much better food and atmosphere.

Service: There wasn't any
We tried to make a reservation the day before our visit and were told by the staff that they were slow not to make one. When we arrived we waited about 5 min by a sign that said to wait to be seated with a menu for Veranda and host stand. Numerous hotel/resturant employees passed us and did not speak. We found another sign with another host stand and waited there and were seated. We did not have a server. Our plates were cleared twice and that was the only time anyone visited the table without us getting their attention. We flagged down someone to get coffee and flagged down someone again to get it refilled. Those were the only times anyone visited our table. We left the credit card laying on the table for over 20 min after the plates had been cleared and 4 servers passed us several times and ignored us - when there were no plates on the table and a credit card laying out! We went to the host stand to ask for our check and pay and the server finally acknoweleged us and we paid. The host asked how everything was and I let him know that no one waited on us, he blamed it on the fact that we did not have a reservation and he acted like he did us a favor to even seat us. I let him know that we tried to make a reservatioln the day before and were told by the staff not to make one and he blammed it on the fact that they had 2 wedding parties. Both he and the "server" were aware of our situation before we left and there was no apology, neither cared.

Food: what they had was good but not "brunch"
We visited for brunch. It was served as a buffett. There was breakfast food available - omlette bar and sides. There was lunch available - carving station, sides, salad, dessert. Both were good but what was missing was any "brunch" specialty food. No quiche, no eggs benedict nothing that you would expect for brunch. Food that ran out was not replaced. Buffett set up was unorganized and understaffed.

Atmosphere: Average
The interior of the hotel is beautiful and the view on the deck is also very nice. They tried to sell it as fine dining and there were white table cloths that was the only thing that could be considered fine dining. We wore "business casual" attire and were very overdressed. There were many ball caps, T-shirts and lots of pool attire.

Overall the food was okay but the buffett where it was served was complete chaos. The tables were too close together, there was only one person working at the omlette bar and if you wanted eggs omlettes were the only thing available so there was a long wait with no where to wait. There was no organization to the buffett and since they discouraged reservations both wedding parties as well as diners like us all showed up at the same time completely overwhelming the set up. The fruit and desserts were not replaced after they ran out. The drinks, that we had to request and then request refills for were not included in the price of the buffett. The brunch buffett at Veranda is overpriced, our experience was awful and the staff did not care.

There are not alot of options here for dining, but this one offers great views. The staff was friendly and service was average. The food was not very memorable but the entire experience was fine.

The previous reviewer was 'right on' about the selections and presentation. It may be advantageous to call for reservations. Lake Lure Inn is a wedding destination- wedding season starts the first weekend of March. We became lost in the shuffle of their first wedding party of the season, the staff rusty from their months off. After the staff hits their stride, and non-wedding guests are seated in a separate area with attentive staff, the experience should be much better.

Brunch is served in the Veranda restaurant, dining room of the 1927 Lake Lure Inn, every Sunday. Tables are nicely set with cloth table cloths, glass and silverware. The buffet is beautifully presented in a part of the lobby of the hotel, traditional breakfast foods are offered as well as a custom omelet station, juice and 'Lake Lure Punch'. The cheese grits are a must! Offerings on the 'lunch' side are regularly rotated. A nice salad bar is provided. This Sunday there was scrumptious pot roast, out of sight, and a pecan chicken casserole as well as a prime rib and roast turkey carving table. There is an assortment of cooked vegetables highlighted by a green bean casserole. The desert 'table' which is a grand piano with a table cloth on it, contained an assortment of cakes, pecan pie and puddings. Ask the wait staff to heat a slice of the pecan pie for you. Mmmmm. Try some of the bread pudding too. Save some room for the fresh fruit and chocolate fondue fountain. Coffee and iced tea were about $2 extra but really good. The wait staff was excellent. They couldn't have been better. The price is $18.75 + tax, tip and coffee or tea or milk. Still a deal for a little over half the price of the Grove Park. :) See www.lakelure.com click 'dining' then 'Veranda restaurant'. for more information including menu dining.
