Our family has stayed at Lake Lure Golf & Beach Resort twice now. Both vacations were fabulously memorable and we will return many times, perhaps every year. The lake and mountain setting of this resort is nothing short of stunning! The rooms are huge and have great views. The staff and the entire community are quite friendly. The golf courses are gorgious and have great elevation changes. The restaurants are nice. The outdoor pools are huge and clean. The beach on Lake Lure is well groomed and provides a nice place to swim as an alternative to the pools. The entire area around Lake Lure looks like something out of a post card.
You do have to travel around 45 minutes to get to a town of any size with the usual mainline restaurants, Home Depot, Wal-Mart, etc., but that's not what we go on vacation for anyway. This is not a wild and crazy place, but if you are looking for a relaxing, enjoyable family vacation place with lots of recreational activity right on site, this is the place.

first as we drove aimlessly for hours trying to find the resort with our wonderful directions, we finally found the place and let me say, looks are very decieving. After getting to the gaurd gate, we again drove for about another hour trying to find our condo. The front desk staff stated that this condo was one of the best on their rental list.
When we walked in, the overwhelming smell of mildew hit us, which we figured wasn't a surprise considering the condo hasn't been updated since the 70's. The condo was decorated in orange wallpaper, shag carpet, and hand-me-down furniture.

After calling the front desk to change condos, the clerk told us that they had nothing else available.

Since this was the first vacation with our two young children, we thought that we would make the most out of our vacation.

The "Spa" is actually a small building with a few ancient pieces of exercise equipment and an indoor pool that caused my children to break out in rashes.

The "Restaurants" are nothing more than a place to get greasy, cold, very expensive food that isn't fit for a dog. We waited for over an hour to get hamburgers and fries. Where is a McDonald's?

There were also a couple of drunk men who kept talking about how they "owned the place" and couldn't wait until they were in office. If this is a place for vacations, please tell the locals not to "bad mouth" the place, facilities, and employees. One waitress was almost in tears from the way the "older men" were yelling. She also talked about how she couldn't wait to get another job.

If you wanted to go on vacation, would you want to hear locals and staff talk very negatively about the place?

The best part of the vacation. . . leaving. We left two days early and vacationed in nearby Waynesville where we had a nice hotel with indoor pool (clean) at the fraction of the cost.

Please think twice when making vacation plans at this place.

We stayed at Fox Run which is part of a large group of town homes going
by various names. Here are the problems we faced. l) we could not
receive a confirmation from the company concerning our stay 2) we were
told we could have the place for only 4 nights, made plans and then
upon checkin were told we had the place for the week and needed to pay
accordingly. 3) Town home at Fox Run was not repaired adequately. It
was clean and had everything supplied, but wall paper was ripped,
floors worn, and the stove needed to be recallibrated. The air
conditioner must also have been set at a prearranged temp since no
matter what we did we could not get it below 86 degrees, and with
humidity, that was miserable. 4) Directions are very poor and the girls
manning the direction booth, seemed to have less understanding than we
did.
5) It is a huge complex, and it is impossible to walk to the swimming
pool, beach etc. 6) Restaurants are inadequate on the weekend. You
simply can not get in, so bring food. You also have to drive a long way
to find a grocery store and the gas stations are limited in what they
sell. When they say they are close to everything such as the Biltmore
etc, they are wrong. 7) The golf course is nice but the golf dining
areas get booked for weddings etc and you can not use them. 8) The
water in Lake Lure is dirty 9) rental boats are small and seem over
priced l0) Our unit had 4 leaks in the ceiling, with rain pouring in.
We called and were told they would be right out. They never showed up!
Good things: l) it is a pretty area 2) The pontoon ride for l0.00 is a great activity and the guide is wonderful 3) pony rides at the petting zoo are really a great activity for kids. It is a beautiful area and you get to walk the ponies around a scenic lake. 4) The rooms are large and you can easily accomodate a couple of families 5) Laura's, in Chimney Rock is a great restaurant and the prices are fair.

Lake Lure Golf and Beach Resort is the south easts answer to Lake Tahoe with one big difference "Southern Hospitality". Two Championship Golf Courses, A Mountain Lake and a whole lot more, what else could we want. Excellent selection of lodging through the resorts rental program. Golf Villas to private homes on what National Geographic called one of the top 10 man-made lakes in the world. We played a Dan Maples course "Apple Valley" with a slope rating every bit of 140 and another beautiful course "Bald Mountain" scene location of the movie "Dirty Dancing", what a beautiful mountain golf course. Treat your self to a tour of Lake Lure from the resorts marina. See why the movie "Last of the Mohicans" was filmed here. Take a sunrise cruise with coffee and danish, or settle in with the sunset wine & cheese cruise. All in all, the staff was friendly, the service good and the panoramic views of the majestic mountains places Lake Lure Golf & Beach Resort as truly one of the bastions of beauty in the Carolina Mountains.

Before taking what was our first (and last) trip to Lake Lure, we called ahead and asked several questions. We were assured that outdoor pools were available, etc. Finding Valley Blvd. was not difficult but finding the resort itself was a nightmare. The two huge signs listed the resort's name had been chopped into two pieces. Our accomodations in Apple Valley Villas were fine and we immediately set off to find the two outdoor pools. The first pool we were sent to had no water. We were sent (Driving as this is a sprawling resport) to a second pool which was filthy. Maids there let us in but we refused to use such a nasty pool - debris literally floating in it and scum on the pool itself. After waiting an hour for someone to show up to look at the pool, we gave up and went to the indoor pool - stepping through construction debris as it was being renovated. I was not impressed with this resort, the professionalism of the staff or their failure to lat us know that they were not fully ready for visitors in May. We wasted our valuable time and money as this was not the relaxing weekend we had hoped for. Oh - the next day no one had touched the nasty pool.
