“We didn't want to leave!”
Reviewed July 14, 2017 for a stay in July 2017

We have just enjoyed the most wonderful holiday down the canal from Escommes to Dijon aboard the Magnolia.
We were met at our hotel in Dijon by the charming Nicholas and driven to the Magnolia where Magali, Frederick and Gypsy welcomed us on board with a glass of champagne.
We were surprised at the vast size of the barge for 6 people! We had so much space both inside and out.
We opted for the self catering cruise so Nicholas kindly drove us to a supermarket, butcher and wine shop to stock up for the next few days (we got further supplies along the canal)
We settled into our spacious cabins complete with large ensuite bathrooms and air conditioning, then hopped on the bikes provided for a quick ride up the canal for an explore before coming back to BBQ our first nights dinner on board.
We hopped in the hot jacuzzi with a drink and watched an amazing lightening storm before heading down to our cosy bedrooms.

The next day we started travelling down the canal, our days varied between riding bikes to local chateaus (it's a loooooong ride over a BIG hill to Commarin but worth it even if you curse me half way!) walking the tow path, stopping in little villages and markets or taking a drive to Beaune to visit some wineries. We ate at some great places along the way (Saint Sabine, La Bussiere and Lock 34 all of which I have separate reviews)
The pace of life is slow and relaxing and the days pass by nicely, even though we had some rain and cloud this does not detract in any way and possibly makes it easier to explore!
Nicholas & Magali are there to guide you if you wish but are very respectful of your space, always ready in the morning with a smile and advice. You couldn't ask for better hosts!
We sadly said goodbye today but have been assured they will move Magnolia to another canal in a year or two so we can come and enjoy her again!

Absolutely nothing to nitpick about -- everything was perfect, especially Nicolas and Magali, the wonderful hosts. They're always upbeat, helpful, and informative, and Fred (crew) and dog Gypsy round out the cast perfectly. We opted to have breakfast only aboard the barge, and each day included beautiful croissants, baguettes, pastries, homemade jams, varying fruits, yoghurt, coffee, and cereal. Magali was the perfect guide, taking us daily to explore a different interesting locale, and she had the best suggestions for dinner, always at a unique location and for a very reasonable price -- they even drop you off and pick you up, making everything so easy. The barge itself is beautiful, spacious, and in immaculate condition, and you have the use of the large well-stocked kitchen and outdoor grill, so it's fun to purchase ingredients and cook in once in a while. Fresh flowers are everywhere, and they haven't forgotten anything in an effort to pamper you. Nicolas and Magali also offer an assortment of good quality wine on board at very reasonable prices, so you needn't bother shopping for wine unless you prefer to do so. You can get off and on the barge at will, to walk or bike along the beautiful parallel paths. I can't recommend this barge more -- everything is perfect!

“Absolutely Fabulous!”
Reviewed June 1, 2017 for a stay in April 2017

A barge trip in France had been on our bucket list and did we luck out to find the Magnolia. We used the Barge Lady Cruises agency in the US which helped us immensely in wading through all the options and finding the Magnolia. It so exceeded all of our expectations. The barge is magnificent--spacious and beautifully appointed. Nicholas and Maggie, the owners, were so gracious and their crew was first class. The food was excellent, there was an interesting excursion every day, their recommendations for the meals on shore were great, and the service while on board the barge was outstanding. The highlight of the trip was dinner at Maggie's parents--a very delightful evening. We can't say enough about how wonderful this trip was. Will definitely travel with them again.

“Perfect - from beginning to end”

We had been confused when trying to book a barge holiday, we were overwhelmed by itineraries, vessels, regions, half board, self catering etc etc, then we were lucky enough to come across a booking agent called Emma from Hotels afloat. Problems solved ! Emma matched us with the Magnolia and it was a perfect fit.

I can highly recommend Emma at Hotels afloat - we couldn't have organised this amazing holiday without her - not just with helping us choose the boat and route but all my questions about hotel suggestions after the cruise, other transport links, other point said of interest etc etc.
The boat Magnolia was picture perfect - everything we could hope for, comfortable, well appointed, spacious, quiet. The crew Nicco and Maggie were amazing - welcoming, interesting, informative and genuinely great company. The tours we did with them were well run, great value and helped us experience the French countryside.

The route the boat took was just right four us - scenic, quiet but still close to all the sights.

It was the trip and experience of a life time. And at an amazing price . I would highly recommend our booking agent and the Magnolia - just splendid.

“Best vacation ever!”
Reviewed October 24, 2016 for a stay in September 2016

Our group of 6 all agreed that our Burgundy Barge Tour on The Magnolia was the best holiday any of us have ever had! (and we are experienced travelers) What a wonderful team :Captain Nico and his wife and Tour Guide Magali, Josh the fabulous Chef, Marie the Cabin Manager, Freddy the Captain's assistant and a beautiful mascot dog named Gypsy were ALL fantastic and made the experience so special! It was such a great combination of beautiful scenery, relaxation, the right amount of excursions, magnificent food, superior wines, really comfortable cabins and top notch service….The team at the Magnolia have truly perfected the Barge Vacation Model! We also had fantastic weather which was a bonus, but it would not have mattered. The itinerary is perfect and the truffle hunt with the truffle dog was one of our favorite experiences.. Magali our guide, born and raised in beautiful Dijon, was quite impressive with both her knowledge AND her passion for the information she shared. Nico and Magali have been in this business a long time and their experience really showed! Of course the entire experience was driven by the fact that they are such wonderful warm and kind people. We booked our trip through Emma (the most efficient person I ever worked with) at Hotels Afloat, which is a travel group with the utmost expertise on Burgundy Barge Tours. There might be 10 barges who offer packages but none could possibly match the perfection of The Magnolia. We will definitely return.

“Amazing, relaxing vacation aboard Magnolia”
Reviewed October 11, 2016 for a stay in October 2016

We recently spent a week aboard the Peniche Magnolia cruising along the Canal Bourgogne. It was a wonderful vacation. The barge is much more spacious than we expected, with high ceilings and ample cabins and bathrooms. The furnishings and finishes are light and airy. The food was delicious and was accompanied by really good wines from the region. The star of the trip, however, was the crew. Nicolas, the captain, is assisted by a top-notch matelot, Frederic, who is very capable and conscientious. Magali, Nicolas's wife and co-owner of the barge, is a great tour guide. She took us on excursions that were varied and informative. We learned quite a bit from her in only one week. The chef, Antonia, prepared great meals that were based on our preferences. Additionally, she has a delightful personality that always had us smiling. Marie was our hostess and is without question one of the most interesting women I have met. She is intelligent, warm, helpful, and kind. We never wanted for anything and often she knew what we would like before we did. Last, but certainly not least, is Gypsy, the barge dog with her favorite squeaky ball. Gypsy worked just as hard as the other crewmembers, walking back and forth along the barge appearing to make sure everything was being handled correctly. We enjoyed this vacation as much or more than any we've ever taken. I would highly recommend a barge cruise on the Magnolia to anyone who wants to relax, be pampered, and enjoy amazing food and wine.

We weren't sure what to expect because we had never been on a barge trip before. The trip was absolutely wonderful! The boat and cabins were much larger than we expected. The crew made us feel like we were family and we had the best time! Niko was a great captain. Magali was absolutely wonderful and the knowledgeable tour guide. She taught us so much about Dijon and could tell she was proud to be from there. You could really tell she loves her job! Marie was the best hostess and took great care of us. Joss was an amazing and creative chef that catered to our needs. We can't wait to come back and plan in telling all of friends!
