Went in late August and the beach was not crowded. Its a bit of a steep drop-off to get into the water, but the bottom is smooth and firm. They have a visitor center and beach house so its nice to have a restroom and place to change. Parking was free and it was a great place to spend the afternoon instead of fighting and paying for parking in Wrightsville Beach.

This was a quiet place to visit. The rough surf and rocky beach areas made for nice photos. It would be a good place to have a camper!

This rec area is great for families with children, as there are life guards in high season, restrooms, showers, and a snack bar. There is beach access for 4WD vehicles, permits cost $12 per day or $50 per year.

On our first day at Carolina Beach, my wife and I decided to drive around see what else was in the area. In minutes were driving though beautiful Kure Beach and decided to check out Fort Fisher. Wow! We spent most of a day at the Fort Fisher State Recreation Area beach and the following morning visited the historical site and the aquarium. fantastic!

The beach area near where we stayed in Carolina Beach was awesome, but the beach at Fort Fisher was even more spectacular. A nice little recreation area. They also have picnic tables. it is dog-friendly and our happy little Bassador (who is all Basset and no Lab when it comes to water) even played around the surf a little. Then he came back and dug a hole in the sand in which to rest. My wife had a blast on her boogie board and I chilled with a book under our umbrella. I am not a "loll around on the beach" kinda guy, but I really enjoyed this beautiful spot.

Just before you get to the beach park, the Fort Fisher battlefield museum is on the right. We visited this museum and grounds the day after our beach excursion. Wilmington was the last Confederate port to remain open during the Civil War. Fort Fisher helped provide cover for blockade runners. The fall of Fort Fisher in early 1865 brought an end to the CSA's ability to import European goods to supply General Lee's army. Interesting history and beautiful grounds.

Oh, and the cost of entry into the park? ZERO. The cost of parking? NADA. We came back to the beach on Sunday (and drove past on Saturday) and, of course, the weekend crowds were larger. However, this is a great place to get away for a day and relax.

Its a quick drive from Raleigh, which is why we like visiting this area. Normally visit Kure Beach with its easy parking and boardwalk. I decided to try something new because I thought there were showers so we didn't have to drive home sandy. The "showers" are really hoses and foot sprayers being used by a crowd of people. Bathrooms are dark and grubby. Overall the facilities were a let down.
Kind of a long walk on hot sand with gear.
Probably won't go back, Kure beach was easier and close to bathrooms and food.
