We took a ferry to Kure Island to visit Fort Fisher. We were very glad we did! The museum was small but very informative and interesting, even for my 4-year-old. We took the short walk around the grounds and discovered the cannons and anchors from civil war ships. The view across the marsh and to the ocean was wonderful. Apart from the ferry ride to get there ($5/car), this was a free outing, and we really enjoyed it!

It was a great beach for the day. It was a little busy getting there but not worse than any other place. Went next to where the rock wall ends. Easy access by the gazebo. The water was warm and clean.

They had bathroom/changing places with outdoor showers and footwashes. As you go to the beach, you will see a flag indicating how the water conditions are.The flag was a green on the first day and a yellow one the second day and the sign explaining what the colors meant. There were lifeguards and park rangers there.Went during the late afternoon when it was not so hot and the water takes a little gettin used to when first entering the water for it was a little chilly.Next to the water, the beach drops down into the water.a shelf further out,and the ocean beyond the breakersTthis was around high tide. The kids had a blast while my wife and I watched them from our portable chairs we had brought from home. The ocean breeze felt good, and relaxing.
In another section near the "trees",the kids were exploring and got cacti on their sandy sandals.

Great place to take pictures of the sunset!! There are paths to walk along the Cape Fear River and marshes. You will see lots of birds back here. Just bring your bug spray. It gets a little bad in the evening.
