Owner description: Old historic fort that was the site of two major Civil War battles.

Had a nice relaxing afternoon walk outdoors around what is left of the fort. There are some beautiful views of the ocean and the harbor that the fort guarded during the Civil War. The museum is full of information, but is small and kind of dark.

Stopped by after visiting the aquarium, and glad we did. I love history, especially battlefields. I grew up in Virginia. I never realized how important Fort Fisher was to the Civil War. After visiting the museum (make sure you watch the 10 minute documentary), we walked out the back door for a walk around parts of the fort. You can walk up one of the earthen dunes where the ammo was housed and the cannons were placed to protect the fort. The entire visit lasted about 1hour.

This is a well preserved example of a earthen fort, basically a strip of man made dunes that housed ammunition in a bunked in the dunes and cannon placements on top of the dunes. If you are a Civil War Buff you must see this park. They have a few vending machines and rest rooms. When we were there they had an assortment of displays and a fiddler. Very Interesting.

I love history but the wife and kids, well not so much. But surprisingly they did enjoy the time there. Not very big and if your short on time you can get in and out in less that an hour. Great model of the fort with fiber opti lights and sound describing the battle and the fall of the fort. What we did like the most is the location and open fields to walk around. If your close worth a look.
