Traveling in eastern NC? Don't miss your chance of a fabulous meal at Chef and the Farmer Restaurant! Make sure to book ahead! We ate on a Tuesday evening. At 6:15, the wait was an hour for those without reservations! A great find in a tiny town for any foodie. Fresh, local ingredients prepared in ingenious ways. Everything from sharing plates to small plates to full size entrees. YUM!

From the moment we stepped in Chef & Farmer until the moment we paid, everything was near perfect. Upon entering the restaurant, we enjoyed the warm, cozy atmosphere and were quickly greeted by the host and then our wait staff. The menu is simple but diverse. We traveled from Raleigh down to Kinston for a day trip (1.5 hours) and we were far from disappointed. Who would have ever thought that a tomato pie as simple as it is could taste as well as it came from a Michelin restaurant. For a day trip I would suggest getting to Kinston around 2:30, head over to Mother Earth Brewery for a flight, then over to the Boiler Room for a cocktail and light appetizer then over to Chef & The Farmer for an amazing experience.

From beginning to end this meal was excellent. Pork belly skewers were by far the favorite. Dunked in the pimiento cheese grits....even better. Soft shell crab was wonderful and so was the banana split dessert. Will definitely be back!

After reading some reviews here, I was a little concerned that we wouldn't be able to get reservations with only 2 days notice, but we did. Even on a Thursday night, this place was packed. We arrived a minute or two before our 8 p.m. reservation, waited maybe 10-15 minutes while the staff dashed about. After we were seated, we had two people greet us to say that they would be serving at our table. One young man (who I guess was the bus person) was very nice but most of what he said was unintelligle, he checked back with us a few times, filled glasses, took plates etc. so no gripes about service. When he talked, we just smiled and nodded. Our waitress was great, but, bless her heart was run off her feet. When she did come to the table I felt that she didn't realy have time to interact with us about the menu. Since we had come all the way from Arkansas, and as we were first timers, that would have been nice. The food did not disapoint, but the experience itself was lacking.

After watching "A Chef's Life" on PBS Create Channel we decided to drive the 3.5 hours from our home, stay in Kinston and eat at the restaurant with two other couples. We were lucky to get a quiet corner and the food was terrific southern style fare. Vivian spent several minutes talking with us and she is exactly as she comes across in the show - honest, hard working and very proud of her restaurant.
