The restaurant was a little hard to find at night--it's hidden on the backside of a large building and the signs were very small. We started out with an oyster appetizer which was good but not great. My husband had the ribeye with a sweet potato gratin. The ribeye was enormous but a good part of it was very fatty and not edible. It was good but was nothing special. The sweet potato gratin wasn't a hit with us--sweet potatos, orange zest, and I think some sort of cheese weren't the best combination. I had pan-roasted chicken with buttermilk mashed potatoes. The chicken was difficult to cut (it seemed tough) and was not seasoned enough. The mashed potatoes were very good, though. We had dessert--a molten chocolate cake with banana ice cream. This was definitely the best part of the meal. The dessert was excellent! The service and atmosphere were good.

Overall, we were a little disappointed. We may give it another shot in the future, but not anytime soon.

We were invited by friends to come and dine with them in Kinston. The drive from New Bern was worth the trip. The atmosphere was relaxing and our waitress was very attentive.
Our party of 9 each had something different. I enjoyed the grilled salmon on lentils. It was an interesting combination and I wasn't disappointed. We arrived after six so it was difficult to find the restaurant at night. The signage was very dim and difficult to see at night unless you're familiar with the area. Great place to eat. The menu was very unique and the presentation was wonderful!

I eat at Chef and the Farmer several times each month and have always left well satisfied. While the menu contains eastern North Carolina products, including seasonal local vegetables and organic produce, the dishes are far from the usual barbecue, fried chicken and fried fish fare available elsewhere in this area. The service is relaxed and friendly. If you want to get in and get out within 30 minutes, this bistro is not for you. If a delicious meal with good wine is the goal, I recommend Chef and the Farmer.

This month, January '07, we ate at The Chef and The Farmer. The staff was welcoming and attentive. The menu was excellent. I understand it changes weekly. Presentation was great. Two in our party ordered the steak which was good quality meat. One ordred the Trigger fish which was perfectly cooked and very tasty. Another ordered the ravioli and also gave it a thumbs up. The appetizers live up to gourmet quality and inventivness. Only two negatives, restaurant is too loud and it took too long, at least 45 minutes, to get our entrees. We understand that sometimes the kitchen is short handed or there are large groups. So we will be back to enjoy the food again and can hopefully upgrade the restaurant to excellent.
