Crowder's Mountain is a satisfying family daytrip, with very nice park facilities--clean bathrooms, accurate maps, clear, updated signs and trail markers, and free parking.
We recommend the Linwood Access on the Crowder's Mountain side (the other side is called King's Pinnacle, also a great hike and a bit higher--1705 feet vs. 1625 on top of Crowder's) because it allows ready access to the ridgetop, with views west to the sunset over South Carolina, and east toward Charlotte, which shimmers, Oz-like on the horizon.
We take the Tower Trail, where we saw a frog, lizard, butterflies and many birds in a mid-afternoon jaunt, 1.8 miles to the radio towers, with challenging switchbacks up to the summit. There we found lots of great rock-climbing and boulder-hopping opportunities along the Rocktop Trail, before taking the 300+ wooden steps that take you down the steep Backside Trail, (just .7 mi. to the Summit and its awesome, nearly 360 views.)
Really a nice place with well-maintained trails, up-to-date signs and clean facilities.
