“Feel of a B&B with the cost of a motel”
Reviewed June 29, 2014

This review is late as I have just created an account (I don't write online reviews for anything), but still a year later my experience at the Outer Banks Inn has stood out as one of the best hotel experiences I have had. My boyfriend and I wanted to visit the Outer Banks, but were on a budget. The Outer Banks Inn had what we expected; low cost amenities and easy access to the beach. The weekend we were scheduled to arrive, a hurricane was expected to arrive. The hotel staff informed us that if we chose to not come we would not be charged for our reservation. We decided to brave it and go anyway. Our travel plans had us arriving early in the morning, so in talking with Emily, she arranged for us to receive an early check-in. We arrived at 4:00am and Chelsea was expecting us and knew exactly who we were. She was extremely pleasant and made us feel right at home, even for 4:00am. The room was ready and waiting for us -- extremely clean. We wanted to visit the beach for sunrise and Chelsea offered to take us on the shuttle, which is a fun golf cart that the staff drive. We chose to walk, which was a shorter distance than expected (2 beach blocks) and really a shuttle is not necessary.
Breakfast was complimentary and included more than just your basic bagel, yogurt, and fruit. It is not gourmet, but there is a large spread and satisfied our needs. Every time we came through the lobby, the staff was extremely knowledgeable, helpful, and friendly. They all knew who we were and engaged in conversation, including the manager, Josh. Even after we had checked out, the staff remained especially attentive and provided us with service.
My favorite part about this experience was the unexpected result, which suited our styles better anyway. Had we the budget, I would have chosen to stay at a bed and breakfast, but in the end the hotel seemed to have what we needed; clean rooms, access to the beach, and an affordable price. I did not expect that we would receive the service that we did. They do what they can to accommodate guest needs and care to get to know who there guests are. If you are looking for the Ritz Carlton experience, this is not the place for you. If you are looking for a clean place to rest your head near the beach, where the staff provide you with extra free amenities (my favorite was the shuttle and breakfast) and impeccable service, then check out the Outer Banks Inn.

No regrets about choosing to stay a night at the OBX Inn during our travels. I was traveling with a 13 year-old nephew whom I had picked up from camp on the Southern Outer Banks, and we were now exploring the Northern Outer Banks. It was his first time to the OBX & he loved the area! (Jockey's Ridge, Wright Bros., Currituck light, etc. --all close to, or easy drive from, this motel.) Only planning to spend a short time, if any, on the beach, so to save money, we stayed at the "off the ocean front" OBX Banks Inn. If we had chosen to spend more time on the beach, it was a simple walk of one block to the beach access, which had a lovely little, raised, gazebo-type, shaded structure where one could sit out of the sun above the beach area, if preferred. With a Triple A discount, the room was a bargain for this area, esp. during the on-season.
Our room was very clean, including a small refrig & a microwave. No view, other than parking area & hwy, but we were not there to spend the day looking out the window; only to sleep in the room.
There was a bit of traffic noise beginning at sun-up, although very faint, so not sleep disturbing. ("Back-side" room--212). Breakfast was ultra-simple, arranged in a clever, space-saving, self-serve style with toast, bagels , and various items placed in pull-out drawers instead of the usual larger, lift-up cases sometimes used in motels with more breakfast self-serving space. A toaster & microwave were available for heating the "drawer" items. Also, instant oatmeal, granola bars, cereal, juice & coffee were included. The breakfast is a very light continental fare, maybe enough to last a few hours---There are nearby restaurants if one needs a heavier breakfast. When originally planning where to stay on our travels, I picked this motel over some others because of the friendliness of the person spoken with over the phone. He is also continually friendly & pleasant in person, although has to be super-tired working incredibly long hours during this time of year. Always a smile and pleasant voice. If clean, basic, not directly on the beach, less expensive is OK with a traveler, I recommend the Outer Banks Inn for a satisfactory, money-saving, lodging option.

Outer Banks Inn is a local place - not a chain motel. It is a pleasant, comfortable place about 1 block and a half from the beach (beach side of the road). They offer a complimentary beach shuttle, but really, if you going to walk on the beach anyway, walk the few steps to get there. Comfortable, clean room, with friendly, helpful desk service, and easy parking. We did not eat the continental breakfast - seemed to be just pastries and coffee in the lobby - but there are several restaurants in easy reach of the motel, some in walking distance. Close to attractions and reasonably-priced. Would recommend for a pleasant, economical place to stay.

Exactly what a room at the beach should be! Clean, comfy, reasonably priced and a staff that goes above and beyond to make you feel welcome and comfortable for your stay! Close to everything, easy to get in and out of the parking lot and ample parking. This is an older hotel but for us this was part of the charm and I would most definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: If you are sensitive to noise don't be close to the entrance door on the 2nd floor as people are...

We strive to make you feel as if you were family here, not just visitors. We completed extensive renovations to the property in 2012, so the hotel has an older feel to it but an updated look. Book from 9/1/14-4/1/15 and mention your name and that you have stayed with us and we can apply that Returning Guest Discount for you :) Take care and have a great summer Judi!

The staff here are great. Always friendly and helpful. The room was clean with a king bed, small refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker and hairdryer. The inn was a few blocks from the beach but they had a shuttle that would take you right to one of the beach accesses. The inn had a nice pool as well.
Located at milepost 9 it is convenient to the northern end to Duck and Corolla as well as down toward Hatteras and Okracoke. Manteo is 20 minutes away.

My husband and I stayed here last night for the Flying Pirate Half. We checked in immediately and was greeted by a friendly young man. We told him that we were here for the race. We were offered a welcome bag (bottle of water and granola bar) with a nice note from the hotel. They also informed us that we could check-out at noon which was enough time for us to run, enjoy the after party and go back for a quick shower before hitting the road. The hotel is older but very clean. The walls are thin and we heard our neighbors throughout the night. Normally this wouldn't bother me but with a 4:30 wake up, I was up a lot. However, this would not prevent me from coming back...just next time, I'll bring ear plugs. It was a perfect location for us-just minutes from the finish line. Not too far from the beach but if you are carrying a lot of stuff, you would most likely need to drive. Again, the customer service stood out for both of us which overshadowed the thin walls and why I rated it a 5.
