I run here almost everyday in the winter. It's quiet and fun to run through these well maintained trails. I just wish you could take your dog with you and that the trails where a bit longer.

There are several trails with wooded walkways. It was swampy though, but since it was early spring, mosquitoes were not a problem.

We just returned from a visit there. It was off the road. Hard to find because we did not take the address. Finally pulled it up with our cell phone. If you enjoy hikes, then go & enjoy. However, be advised there are NO facilities. We were both raised in the country & accustomed to seeing nature....so for us it was pretty commonplace. If you go, don't bother to carry a camera. It got pretty bulky and heavy before the end of our 2.5 mile "hike". Wish I had opted for the short loop @ the head of nature trail.

We enjoyed the trails very much. It was a lot more hilly than we expected, which was great for us, but not very good for those who are not accustomed to hiking. Interesting scenery as well, different ponds and trees than I'm used to seeing. We also were hearing a lot of nearby gun shots which was quite unnerving, but all was well, there is just a shooting range nearby and it wasn't hunters roaming around in the woods.

The great majority of visitors to this area are not aware of this preserve and its walking opportunities of 7-8 miles, encompassing hundreds of acres of essentially unspoiled and varied terrain. Do not miss this opportunity - it is very worthwhile for all ages.

The trailhead is only about five minutes off the main north-south road in Nags Head. We walked the 3.75 double loop, which took in many freshwater ponds, sand, beautiful woodland trails, and a few ups and downs. Not a hard hike, but not all flat either. We enjoyed seeing blue herons and other birds we were not familiar with. We could also hear other animals from time to time, back in the brush. If you prefer, you can choose a 1/2 mile loop, or a 1.5 mile out and back. You really get an appreciation for nature's adaptability and for the way things were in many places when the first Europeans arrived. Doing it in early spring was probably beneficial, since it was not too hot and buggy.
