This is the way the Outer Banks used to be. The trails get a little tricky but that is the fun of it. A treasure that needs to be part of the Outer Banks forever

We were riding around on our motorcycle trying to find a way over to the beach to watch the sunset and found ourselves on this dirt road riding through swamps. We couldn't find the sun but enjoyed the ride around this preserve, although I bet there are things that bite and make you sick or itch if it were any hotter that day!
A totally different outer banks experience. Their is now a trail that is wheelchair accessible. Definitely worth checking out if you and the family are looking for something different to do.
Wonderful trails of varying degrees of difficulty. Beautiful woods. Plenty to see. Clean bathrooms and friendly folks at the visitors center. Don't forget your map of the trails. I love this area and go frequently. Perfect for a day off the beach and if you like photography, you'll have ample opportunity to shoot photos.
Its buggy, very buggy during the Summer but if you go in the very early morning or for a night hike with flashlights you will see some amazing maritime forest treasures. A must-see for true nature lovers. Bring water shoes and hike the shoreline or go for a swim. The trails are well marked and preserved for walking.
If you like to walk, and want a break from the ocean for an afternoon, try the trails in the Nags Head Woods preserve. We are locals and enjoy coming here quite a bit.
