I stayed here for the first weeks that the property was opened as I was in town on business. Overall, I found the hotel to be a nice place to stay and will return. The property is new and likely still figuring some quirks out, so give them a chance to fix/address issues. Here is a quick description of my observations and experience.
The property opened 04/2013 and according to staff was built to be a "green" Hilton property. Several steps I noticed that appear to be a part of the "green" designation: the parking lot has vehicle charging stations, there are reserved parking spaces for ULEVs, microwaves are only in suite rooms, the elevator lights turn off when not in use and light switches located by the door inside of guest rooms switch almost all outlets off. I am sure that there are other aspects that lend the hotel to this designation, but these were the most noticable.
One annoying aspect of this designation is the elevators. There are two elevators and two seperate call buttons; unless you are on the ground floor you have no idea where each elevator is and likely push BOTH call buttons. One day I rode the elevator down from the 4th floor and stopped at both the 3rd and 2nd floor to discover that whoever had called the elevator had already gotten on the other one that arrived first. Staff members informed me that they were required to install seperate call buttons, but that they are not happy about it and may look into changing this. Not very customer focused and I have a hard time believing that this setup would actually save energy.
Rooms are nice and comfortable, as you would expect in a new Hampton Inn. The smell of construction is still present, but is not overbearing. Time or a few treatments of air freshener should address this. Standard rooms are equipped with refridgerators and suites add the convenience of a microwave. Televisions are nice large flat screens with lots of channels and even a guide. The TV tuning in the rooms that I stayed in was a little delayed and often I had to wait 10-15 seconds for the station to be visible. I also noticed that the sound did not always match up with the picture. While this is something sometimes encountered on all TVs, the delay was at least a couple of seconds and took away from watching the movie on one of the multiple HBO channels offered. No pay per view or on demand movies are offered.
Breakfast offers three hot choices each morning; one is usually eggs and the others change. In addition to this, fresh fruit, bread/bagel/muffin, cereal, yogurt, hard boiled eggs, milk and coffee are available. Breakfast staff is friendly and aims to please.
The business center provides two Lenovo computers, laser printer and shredder for guest use. I used the business center one evening and was quite pleased with what they had to offer and encountered only minor issues that were easy to resolve without assistance.
Pool & Fitness Center
The hotel has an outdoor pool and fitness center. I used neither. Fitness center has several pieces of exercise equipment and a TV. Pool is simple and the typical small hotel pool.
The hotel is located on Western Blvd and is convenient to many shops and businesses. I was able to walk to Carolina Ale House, Olive Garden, Arby's and Target; other shops are also in walking distance.
Staff members are friendly and helpful, but many seem new to hospitality and are still learning the systems. Check-in took a little bit longer as efficiencies are still being learned so be patient.
I think this is probably the nicest hotel in Jacksonville based on the fact that it is the newest in town. I'll be staying again in the future when work has me in the area. Hopefullly some of the issues I've noted are only temporary.
