“We in good conscience CANNOT recommend this property, lost our deposit!”
Reviewed January 17, 2016 for a stay in November 2015

We have been staying at flip-keys / TripAdvisor's rentals for many years and have never once had any problems until now. We have NEVER written a negative review and have always found these rentals to be a great experience. The owner of this property claimed that we left the property a total mess with outlandish accusations of un-cleanliness. These claims are completely false. We feel robbed and hope this review will protect other potential renters from having the same experience.

My family and I stayed in this home over the Thanksgiving holidays, 2015. The home is very old and there were mice feces throughout the kitchen drawers, cabinets and pantry areas requiring us to wash everything in the kitchen before use. The kitchen towels had been used to create a mice nest and when we pulled out a towel, mice feces and nesting flew all over the kitchen. Due to the holidays, we decided to take the high road and dealt with the mice feces by spending the first night washing all the dishes and cleaning the kitchen.

We had a nice Thanksgiving and left the home in much better condition than when we arrived. All the beds were made, dishes were all cleaned, trash was bagged and placed in the mud room due to no outside trash receptacle and used towels were collected and left in the only bathroom. The owner left NO instructions as to what she wants done before exiting the property and did not respond to our questions regarding this.

A week after our stay the owner falsified a claim against us through TripAdvisor, which resulted in us losing $400 of the $500 deposit. The owner nor TripAdvisor ever presented us with any evidence. We felt swindled out of our deposit! Due to this experience, we in good conscience CANNOT recommend this property.

This situation is simply a dispute between two parties with differing views about how to care for a home during a rental and what it means to leave it in respectable shape upon departure. We have been hosting flip key rentals for 5 years with remarkable results with the folks we have rented to. We have never had a dispute or bad review nor attempted to retain any portion of a deposit. In this particular case our caretaker had to spend 2 days to clean our home to restore it back to it normal condition. Our towels were stained and ruined, rugs stained, our organic blankets were stained as well as a one of a kind quilt. The home in general was left in a serious mess in particular our bathroom. As such we kept a portion of the deposit to cover the cost of new towels and the additional cleaning fees.
As for the mouse droppings in one small kitchen drawer this is true. Our home is an hour north of Asheville in a remote, albeit beautiful part of the Blue Ridge Mountains as such an occasional field mouse or other small creature will find their way into our home which is not lived in full time. We pay an expensive service monthly and our care taker to mange that creatures do not make a home in our home, and 95% of the time we are successful. Occasionally in the autumn months as it gets cold we are not successful. This is simply life in such a beautifully remote part of our world.
In closing, we immediately offered to spilt the depot 50% 50% (even thought this by would not cover the costs of our damage) as it is more important to us to find peaceful, fair, balanced solutions between one another in life. This way our renters would feel acknowledged for the trouble of the mouse droppings and we would have a contribution toward our damages. We never heard an answer from our renter so we had to pursue this claim thorough Flipkey who made the final decision. Additionally, we gave them our phone number and our caretaker's number (whom is just down the street) so she can attend immediately to any problems with the home. She would have come over instantly and taken care of the mouse dropping problem. Ultimately this would have taken less time than all the photographing etc. Upon departure our tenant sent us a lovely note thanking us for a wonderful stay with no mention of any problems. I realize folks have different understandings of what neat and clean is and different things bother each of us differently, it is for this reason we tried to solve this peacefully and equitably and will continue to should his ever occur again. I am sure renters will fine our home full of loving peaceful energy should they choose to rent our home , but if not you will find we are happy to be kind and helpful to help solve any problems that arise.
