We know the island very well, Its not a glamorous place, just peace and quiet. Fun for walks, searching for shells and spending time on the sand and in the waves. You can rent bikes, boats, and jet ski s etc. Only a few good places to eat. No fast food, unless you drive into shallotte. I love renting our house down on Holden, because we enjoy our time together just laying around and catching the sun and building sand castles. But its close enough to just hop in the car and go on a road trip and explore the surrounding areas. Especially with Mrytle beach right down 17.
If you love to fish, you will fit right in with the local fishermen. This is the only thing I do not like, because they have their poles high up on the beach, with their lines in the water. If walking, you must walk up around them. We rent a specific house, and nothing annoys me more when a fisherman and his buds are parked right in front of the house. Our family has to walk down far from the house just to avoid them, Why cant they go to the pier. or find a space where their are no houses. Its plenty of room. I feel Holden should set certain places for fishing. Unless you rent or own the home.

If you like over-developed with tourist-themed overload, this is not the place for you. This is the best place for a family to go that wants to relax and enjoy the beach and a relaxed pace of life. After spending many visits here, we are now homeowners.

If you want a beach where all there is to do is walk on the beach, look for shells and sand dollars, watch the sunrise and sunset, and just chill, you will enjoy Holden. If you get tired of the quiet, Myrtle Beach is only an hour away.

We stayed here in Aug 2012 for about 6 days off the beach at a friends place.

We rented a Skiff and a Pontoon boat to travel the intercoastal and it was GREAT!! We would not recommend the Skiff at all. It is a rough riding boat to say the least. Especially, when you are going through the entry of the Atlantic thru Wilmington.

This was something we have never done and it was great. To see the landscape on the intercoastal from a boat vs. the car is unbeleivable. Totally different than you would expect.

We went to Wilmington (Skiff) and then to North Myrtle Beach (Pontoon) and had lunch on different days in those places and others. We spent a day docked on the beach of a little inlet and had a nice grilled shrimp lunch thanks to the disposable grills bought at walmart. Perfect day!

We went to Holden Beach for a day and it was perfect, quiet, and very family oriented. The area (beach) doesn't have any major hotel chains and is mostly home rentals.

We would return here in a second. Great place to visit. Especially for families.

It was time to bring my adult kids back together. They had drifted apart (with families of their own) and I wanted to get them spend time with me and each other. No other place could do that for me like Holden. We rented a big luxurious house, we all live together, play games at night, sat by the pool, and played in the waves all day. My girls cooked for us all - it was perfect. Good value, good times. It was what we needed, we will be back.
