“Very nice place”
Reviewed August 12, 2012

I loved the atmosphere and the barbeque. Had a combo platter with the brisket and bbq pork. Both were very good, as were the sauces. My only criticism is that the portions are not very big.

“Lunch time visit - excellent!”
Reviewed August 5, 2012

I visited at lunch during the week. Very busy, but prompt service and food arrived within 10 minutes of being seated. Quality of food was excellent. Quantity was just right - not too full, didn't leave hungry.

I had a chopped plate with the red slaw and green beans as my sides. The green beans are cooked on the grill and are deliciously seasoned. I highly recommend!

“Really Disappointed.”
Reviewed August 4, 2012

We really wanted to like this place. The idea of a BBQ restaurant that offers both eastern NC and Lexington style BBQ, as well as chicken, beef brisket, Brunswick stew, catfish, and various side dishes is worth the execution. However, our first (and probably last) visit fell short. Observations follow:

1. We had a 30-minute wait. That's ok, if it's worth waiting for. It wasn't.

2. The BBQ sandwich with "Lexington slaw" was much too vinegary. A strong vinegar flavor is an eastern NC flavor, not a Lexington flavor. Real Lexington BBQ: i) has a subtle vinegar, hot pepper, and tomato flavor, balanced by a subtle sweetness from the slaw, ii) is slow-cooked over hickory wood, and iii) has an accompanying "dip" for additional juice.

3. The first few bites of this BBQ tasted of bottled smoke. I could be wrong, but the smoky taste was strange.

4. Spouse's combo plate of BBQ and Brunswick stew was luke warm at best, almost cold. He also said the Brunswick stew had an off taste; he loves good Brunswick stew, but couldn't eat this.

5. There were only four (4) tiny round hushpuppies on spouse's plate. None came with my sandwich and side. Why in the world a BBQ restaurant would be stingy with hushpuppies is beyond me.

6. The beer wasn't cold. Not warm, just not cold.

If you want eastern style BBQ, this place might fit the bill. But, since Lexington style BBQ isn't really appreciated in this part of the state, maybe they should forego this option, or if they keep it on the menu, work on the flavor and offer authentic "dip." If you want real Lexington BBQ, go to Lexington, where you'll also get a generous basket of hushpuppies with refills. And pay less.

“Excellent BBQ, friendly service”
Reviewed July 31, 2012

Four of us were delighted with the BBQ beef brisket, and the catfish. Generous sides included collards, hush puppies, 3 kinds of slaw, grilled stringbeans, etc etc. A super good meal.

“The fried okra - OMG”
Reviewed July 27, 2012

Awesome fried okra, good BBQ, nice selection on the taps, friendly service! Only drawback is the restaurant's popularity - you can expect to wait a while for a table.

The BBQ is good - really good - but the fried okra oh my goodness! So delicious and perfect. Okra is hard to get right, but HBC has hit it outta the park.
