Beautiful and lush forest lined drive. Made the drive on a motorcycle and experienced many fun curves.

“River/Mountain/Waterfalls.....”
Reviewed July 9, 2014

The section of road west of Highlands along Hwy 64 to Franklin NC is one of the most scenic you will find anywhere. My opinion it is best viewed coming east from Franklin toward Highlands as you climb from the valley up the mountains to over 4,000 feet in elevation. If you ride a motorcycle and haven't taken this road, you a missing a huge treat.

“Beautiful mountain gorge views”
Reviewed March 29, 2014

There are only a few pull-offs on the road along the gorge. But the views are of a very nice mountain gorge. Nothing spectacular, but still very pleasant to drive along and stop on occasion to take some mountain gorge photos.

“Some spectacular sites”
Reviewed December 14, 2013

This stretch of highway from Franklin to Highlands is consistently rated as one of America's top-ten scenic drives. The waterfalls of the river are worth several stops along the road for closer view. Depending on the season, you'll have unobstructed views, sometimes with ice (in winter), magnificent color (in autumn -- probably the best time to visit), or mountain laurels in full bloom. Select a designated driver who'll keep his or her eyes on the highway, and not on the scenery -- the road is notoriously twisting, curving, and single-lane, and there's often a lot of traffic. It's best to start your drive from Franklin, and not from Highlands -- the river view faces you.

“Bring Your Bathing Suit”
Reviewed November 14, 2013

While this is not the best time to swim in the waterhole at the bottom of the gorge try it in warmer weather. Water is always cold but awesome. There is a rope to climb and jump or you can climb just above the waterhole and slide down. 3/4's of the way down is a hole you can try to sit it. Its really a challenge. Great break for teenagers.
