“Absolutely magical.....”
Reviewed July 20, 2010

........was our experience at Fire Mountain Inn. It was even better than advertised. We stayed for my birthday on a Friday and Saturday night. A special order had flowers, robes and slippers waiting upon our arrival to our cabin. The massages were wonderful and when we returned to our cabin there was champagne and chocolate covered strawberries waiting. Spending the day driving through the mountains for photos was perfect. The peace and quiet was marvelous. We didn't miss the tv, radio or phone at all. We didn't even turn on the car radio. The weather, peace and quiet at Fire Mountain Inn made for an absolutely magical birthday experience. The staff was practically invisible, but were always available and very cooperative when needed. We will definitely return.

What a wonderful place to relax and enjoy the mountains. There was virtually no noise except animal, bird, and evening thunder storms. I thoroughly enjoyed not hearing a TV or radio. After a day of sightseeing and shopping, it was great to return to the quietness of the mountains. Every morning I looked forward to a special and well prepared delicious breakfast that Matthew served. The tables were set with with table cloths, candles and fresh flowers from the property. Each day featured diffierent selections and each was delicious. There was always plenty for a 2nd plate if so desired. I will return for another visit.

What a pleasure to discover Fire Mountain Inn outside Highlands, NC! We had stayed in Highlands village previously, but this time we were seeking an escape to the mountains, and we wanted to know that we were in the mountains. Eureka! We thoroughly enjoyed the respite that this serene setting offered. We stayed five nights and found that we completely relaxed and were so refreshed after retreating from all the demands (technological and otherwise) from busy schedules and lives. Southern hospitality was at its best with the warm, friendly management who offered wonderful guidance to the excellent restaurant choices available with a short drive to HIghlands..........and even provided help/solution to a flat tire situation! What a treat the breakfasts were every morning with a selection of fresh fruit and home-cooked breakfast foods featuring fresh, seasonal garden-to-table ingredients with variety in texture and taste. A feast for the eye as well as the palate! In addition to the wonderful breakfasts he prepared every day, Matthew was the epitome of the gracious host as he offered guidance and suggestions for hikes or other activities. What pleasure we discovered on Fire Mountain!

I have been to Fire Mountain before with my partner, and we wanted to return with our 9 month old twins and yellow lab. We stayed for a long weekend on the 4th, and had such a good time. It is so beautiful up there. The twins and the dog love our walks on the property. There is a waterfall nearby which we walked to early onee morning. The twins loved looking at the peaches on the peach trees! The one-room cabin was so charming and cozy. The bed was very comfortable, and we loved buidling a fire in the mornings when it was cool. The fireplace is all stone which is hard to come by these days when everything is pre-fab. Fire Mountain is very pet friendly. Our dog loved hangin out with us on the porch while we rocked the babys and enjoyed the natural beauty of the mountians.

We rented one of the one room cabins again and I only wish we could go there more often. It's so quiet and the only place I know around Highlands where you can get that much open sky and a view. We'll definitely go back...sooner the next time.

We were traveling to Atlanta for a Triathalon event and wanted a couple of days of relaxation prior to the busy weekend (and away from work), and this was perfect. It was clean, the bed was very comfortable (and the pillows were terrific, too). A real hideaway, quiet and restful, just what we were looking for.

I agree with the negative reviews on this site, unfortunately. I really wanted to love this place. I booked the most expensive room--Satohla--because it is spacious and has two "decks". Our views: trees, a parking lot and an "herb garden". We could see the tip of a mountain if we stood up and craned our necks. The hammock on our concrete patio was non-functional, unless you enjoy being folded in half with your feet in the air. The carpet (sisal) in our room had several very large stains, as did the white linen curtains (which did not block out any light whatsoever). Forget about sleeping in if you are in this room, as it is below the breakfast room. Heavy footsteps begin early. No soundproofing here. Forget about feeling you have any privacy whatsoever, as people are walking by frequently on both sides of this room (gravel crunching, dog walking, etc.). The large bathroom was extremely cheaply constructed and outdated, with poor lighting, a TINY shower, and no amenities. At these prices (our room was $285 per night plus tax) wouldn't you at least expect conditioner and body lotion? How about towels that aren't thin and frayed? A robe, perhaps? Even a morsel of a complimentary snack, especially given that town is a 20 minute drive and there is no fridge in the room? Others' comments about breakfast were correct. It's not worth waiting around for. The bottom line--we expected luxury and beautiful views, and Fire Mountain provided neither.

Fire_Mountain, General Manager at Fire Mountain Inn, responded to this review, March 12, 2011
This guest expressed complete satisfaction regarding her experiences at Fire Mountain to every staff person that she came in contact with during her stay. She went out of her way at check-out, as did her partner, to complement her accommodation; the property and the Fire Mountain staff and then went directly home and wrote a scathing review regarding her stay. To say we were confused would be an understatement.

The reviewer says she agrees with the negative reviews on this site. She demeans all guests who have written wonderful reviews on Trip Advisor, resulting from an excellent stay at Fire Mountain, as having written over–hyped reviews.

It is evident from her review that she did not like the most popular accommodation at the Fire Mountain Inn. Our repeat guests return over and over to the Satohla accommodation in the Inn. Why it was necessary for the reviewer to grossly misrepresent and present untrue allegations regarding this accommodation is certainly a mystery but we feel that these allegations should be addressed and clarified.

She did not book the most expensive room at Fire Mountain as indicated. The price for Satohla in the Inn is right in line with our market area and offers an excellent value as evidenced by it being the most popular accommodation in the Fire Mountain Inn that our guests return to.

The views from the Satohla accommodation in the Fire Mountain Inn are exactly as shown and described on the Fire Mountain website. The sunset view goes out 40 to 50 miles on a clear day directly from the sleeping and sitting area of the accommodation and also from the private covered sunset terrace. This accommodation also opens to a sunrise covered terrace that does have a view of our beautiful herb garden and when out on the sunrise terrace there are views out in two directions. It is not necessary to stand up and crane ones neck to see these views as they may be viewed from the bed and sitting area inside of the accommodation and directly from sitting in the lounge chairs, hammocks and café table and chairs on either covered terrace.

The hammock on the sunset terrace was in perfect operating order during her stay as it is today. We use Smith & Hawkin Brazilian fabric hammocks which are some of the best made. They are completely adjustable and a simple call to Guest Services would have brought a staff member over to show how the hammock could easily have been adjusted to accommodate whatever problem this guest was experiencing. Hammocks are extremely popular at Fire Mountain and are the main reason that some guests choose the accommodations that have them. Relaxing or reading in a hammock while taking in long range mountaintop views is one of the true luxuries offered at Fire Mountain.

There is no sisal carpet in this accommodation as indicated. The flooring is wall to wall pine wood flooring with two natural wool overlays, one under the sitting area and one under the sleeping area. There is no direct morning sunlight into this accommodation and to say the heavy white cotton loft drapes do not block out any light whatsoever is incorrect. The crisp white and clean cotton loft drapes had no stains on them during her visit nor do they now.

When staying in the main building of the Fire Mountain Inn you will be staying in a common use building with six accommodations, a sitting area, a library, a commercial kitchen, a dining room, storage areas, common hallways, exterior decks and exterior terraces. Yes, as in every common use building you should experience some sound transmission at times. Since our inception in 1996 no one has ever complained about sound transmission in this building or any of the other two buildings that make up the Fire Mountain Inn as all are very well insulated. If one desires as much peace and quiet and solitude as possible then they would take one of our free standing mountaintop luxury cabins and all cabins have fully equipped kitchens for those that desire a refrigerator in their room. Complimentary ice, ice buckets, cocktail and wine glasses, wine openers, ice buckets are provided for all accommodations at Fire Mountain. Upon request insulated coolers (large and small) may be provided for ones deck or terrace or to take on excursions.

You have complete privacy in the Satohla accommodation as in all accommodations at Fire Mountain. Yes folks walk and hike around our hundreds of mountaintop acres, yes you can hear the sounds of gravel crunching in the distance and yes guests walk dogs as our cabins are pet friendly and also our guests can hear the sounds of nature as we do not have air conditioning as it is not needed. You actually are able to hear the simple, normal and melodic sounds of life and nature instead of the constant buzz of air conditioning vents and compressors.

The bathroom of this accommodation is neither cheaply constructed nor outdated and has excellent lighting (480 watts total). We do not consider the use of solid wood, ceramic tile, acrylic, porcelain, brass and chrome in a bath as being cheaply constructed. The shower is far from tiny as it is handicapped accessible making it very large for a shower. Shampoo, conditioner and body lotion is provided in every accommodation bath at Fire Mountain. Towels are not thin and frayed. If all of these conditions existed in baths at Fire Mountain we are quite sure that the reviews posted on this site would have made mention of such. Robes are available upon request as indicated on the Fire Mountain website. Complimentary snacks are presented in the main dining area of the Inn, most of which come directly from the organic orchard on the property during our High Season months.

It is strange that the reviewer awards us a 4 star rating for location and then misrepresents that the village of Highlands is a 20 minute drive away when in fact it is an 8 to 10 minute drive away (6.2 miles).

Over 95% of the reviews posted that review breakfast express that the breakfast served at Fire Mountain is a wonderful and very delicious experience. Most of the ingredients used come from the Fire Mountain fields, orchards and organic gardens. Our breakfast cuisine and the relaxed starting time each morning are some of the reasons that many of our guests choose to return again and again to Fire Mountain.

Fire Mountain has never marketed as a four or five star luxury property. The reviews posted on this site clearly show that Fire Mountain provides natural luxuries not found anywhere else and we are known for our mountaintop views which have been mentioned in many articles from regional publications to the New York Times. Fire Mountain is an exceptional value for the experience provided.

Even though this negative review is in total contrast to the positive thoughts that she and her partner expressed to many staff members during their stay we are very conflicted as to why these guests did not let staff know of their displeasure so that management could have been given an opportunity to eliminate their displeasure. Other accommodations might have been available that would have been more to their liking. Our staff would have been most pleased to have worked with them to find solutions to the displeasure that they evidently were feeling during their stay. Unfortunately unless we know that there are concerns or problems we are not able to help our guests. When we ask a guest if everything is ok or if they need anything and they respond that everything is excellent but in reality they are not feeling such it certainly gives us no way to know their true feelings regarding their experiences during their stay. Our staff is here to assist all of our guests with any matters that would enhance their stay and we all gain immense satisfaction in exceeding the expectations of our guests.

As evidenced by the many reviews posted on this site any reader of this response will find a most unique and unconventional getaway experience at Fire Mountain that many folks treasure for life and that many return to again and again. We sincerely hope that we have the privilege to welcome you as our guests so that we may have the opportunity to exceed your expectations as you experience the many luxuries provided in our spectacular location here at Fire Mountain in the Highlands of Western North Carolina.
