Having decided that we did not want a fancy dinner or a burger (which seems to be most of the offerings in Highands) we chose to go to the Highlands Smokehouse for dinner.

The Smokehouse has the usual array of BBQ--chicken, pulled pork etc. I had the pulled pork and it was good--nothing spectacular but tasty and a decent portion. They have some good homemade sides--I would recommend the Broccoli Salad and the mac n cheese. My mother had the fried catfish which she enjoyed. The only thing I didn't care for was an appetizer called Smoked Pimento Cheese. It was really bad--it's just that it wasn't what we were expecting. The smoke really changed the taste of "pimento cheese", plus it is served hot in a little skillet. So in the end it is more like a smoked cheese dip than pimento cheese.

Lastly, the decor is very simple but nice and we had a terrific server and they have a nice selection of craft beers to choose from.

Ate lunch at the Highlands Smokehouse today with my wife, two daughters and four grandchildren. The food as good, and the restaurant is definitely kid friendly. Luther was our server and he was excellent. A good place to take your family for lunch.

The food, service, and ambiance are better than the Carolina Barbeque restaurant in Cashiers. Highlands was very busy but handled the crowd with efficiency and courtesy. It did take a while to order and receive our food, but when we did it was really good bbq. Sauces, both vinegar- and sweet-based were on the table, along with hot sauce. We had the pulled pork and it was smokey and tender, with no chunks of mushy fat. The potato salad, cole slaw, and mac and cheese were fresh and flavorful. The fruit crisp was yummy as well. There is a nice deck with a pretty view of some woods, but because of heavy rain we didn't get to take advantage of it. Side note: While in Highlands try the breakfast in the large grocery store in town and tour the nature center!

The Brunswick Stew was delicious as was the pork sandwich. The fried pickles were good, but a bit too salty. (But that didn't stop us from eating them all!)
The waitress was efficient if not friendly. (She wasn't rude - she may have been gaving a tough day)
We would definitely eat here again.
