“It's our favorite b & b for a western NC mountain getaway”
Reviewed July 10, 2011

We live a little over an hour away from several wonderful mountain towns: Asheville, Cashiers, Hendersonville, Flat Rock and Highlands. We've stayed at inns in those towns, but not since we found Colonial Pines Inn in Highlands. We love bed & breakfasts and prefer to stay in them over hotels whenever we can.

Its very simplicity is what appeals to us. Their beds have high quality queen or king size mattresses, the breakfasts are fantastic and the inn's atmosphere is cozy and very relaxing. Located at the top of a hill, the inn gets clean mountain breezes. Beautiful sunsets are visible from 2 huge porches that have a hanging swing, and comfy chairs to read in. What the Inn lacks: noise, crowds and television in most rooms. It also lacks the outrageous room rates common to many bed & breakfast inns in desirable "getaway" locations.

From the painstaking restoration of the Inn to the vigilant maintenance of everything on the property; from each carefully chosen antique to the crispness of the ironed sheets on your bed, no detail is missed. From your first call or email to the innkeepers until you hand them back their keys, they are professional and polite as well as warm and friendly.

Like all good innkeepers, they are familiar with the local attractions, from historical to cultural to natural, and the local restaurants, from the sandwich shops and the ice cream shops to the different fine dining establishments.

Check out their website--it is as beautiful as the pictures show it to be!

This is the place we like to stay in Highlands. Probably the best value in town. The accomodations are clean. Breakfast is delightful. You can pay a lot more for lodging in Highlands. So if you want a nice stay without emptying your wallet, this is the place.

We are in our late 60s and have stayed at many B&Bs across the country. Our experience at Colonial Pines was among the best.

We read many reviews before selecting Colonial Pines and the fact Chris and Donna have owned this B&B for more than 25 years, sold us on giving it a try. We stayed in the Guest House, which is next to the main home. It was fantastic. It gave us more room than a typical B&B room since it had seperate dining and living area - it was very cozy.

The location was ideal not too close to town but within walking distance. Donna is a wonderful cook and we enjoyed every breakfast along with the snacks and drinks in the afternoon. We had the opportunity to view most of the rooms and they are all wonderful. Several have TVs. So keep that in mind if this is important to you.

What we liked best: There was no air condioners and you could hear nature so clearly. We slept with our windows opened and had to use a blanket one night - it was wonderful. The mattress and pillows were wondeful.

We enjoyed interacting with Chris and Donna and truly felt like we were at home.

What you see on their website is what you get.

This was our first trip to Highlands and we plan to return at least once each year staying at Colonial Pines.

My wife and I had never stayed in a bed & breakfast here in the States (we are retired military and frugal) until this week when we lucked out and spent 3 nights at the Colonial Pines Inn in Highlands, NC. Wow, what a great experience! The room was spotless, rustic, cozy, charming and comfortable, and the common areas (fireplace and seating area, dining room, and pantry with 24 hour snacks) were also well-appointed, homey, and inviting. The gourmet breakfasts were exceptional and the proprietors, Chris and Donna Alley, were perfect hosts, anxious to meet every need and offer great advice on what to do and see in Highlands. The rates were very reasonable, especially when compared to other nearby B&Bs. We are planning to return in the early summer and we can strongly recommend the Colonial Pines Inn without any hesitation.

I have never taken the time to write a review on TripAdvisor, but I just felt that I had to share what a wonderful experience my wife and I had at Colonial Pines this past weekend.

The Inn is impeccably maintained and clean and exceedingly charming. Innkeepers Chris and Donna served us the two best breakfasts we have ever had, and they have mastered the art of being friendly and welcoming, while also giving ample privacy. Whether sipping wine by the fireplace or enjoying the peace and quiet afforded us by our cozy and well-appointed room, we loved every minute of our stay.

I highly, highly recommend Colonial Pines.

(Note - Colonial Pines is incredibly close to shops and restaurants as well).

We started coming up to Highlands from Atlanta many years ago at the persuasion of my husband by Chris Alley. He was a business associate of my husband's and was finally able to convince us to come up and visit he and his wife Donna at the Inn. We fell in love with them, Highlands and this gorgeous, mountain Inn! That was some 20+ years ago and we are still coming back again and again to Highlands. They are the best and the Inn feels like a favorite Aunt's home you go to for a wonderful stay! Chris and Donna have remained friends through the years and the Inn remains as wonderful as ever. You will not be disappointed!

My wife and I stayed at Colonial Pines for only one night, wish we could have stayed longer.

Our room was very clean and well appointed for the price of the Inn. Breakfast was very good and the innkeepers were pleasant and friendly.

A few words of caution: The inn is not air conditioned. That did not matter to us, but maybe it will to you. Our room did not have a TV. Once again, that did not matter to us.

We will most likely stay there again.
