Description: Highland Avenue changed the culinary landscape of Hickory, North Carolina when the farm-to-table restaurant opened in 2013 and has garnered regional and national praise for locally sourced foods. On any given day, farmers and purveyors are walking through the back door, arms loaded down with produce, cheese and meats from their North Carolina farms. Highland Avenue is quickly becoming a destination for people who love good food. Located on the second floor of the beautifully renovated former Holler Hosiery Mill in the up and coming Southeast District of Hickory, Highland Avenue pays homage to the city's rich manufacturing history while focusing on New American cuisine. Appalachian trout, pork belly, shrimp and grits, scratch made breads and pasta, and house cured meat are a few of the popular items you'll find on the menu. The restaurant offers stunning, seasonal fare and provides guests with a taste of true Southern hospitality.

“Just Awfull”
Reviewed August 24, 2013

Do not order the oysters, unless you like tasteless fried cotton balls. Skip the shrimp and grits, just go to waffle house and order a half-pound of bacon. Forget about the hanger steak, unless you carry your own seasonings, it too will be tasteless, and the portion is very small.

“Delicious Farm to Table”
Reviewed August 12, 2013

We were visiting friends in Winston-Salem and had heard fantastic things. We drove over to Hickory specifically to eat at Highland Avenue. The space is an old textile mill that has been converted into restaurant and retail space, and they did an excellent job. It's very architecturally interesting, with a mix of the old--windows, ceilings--and the new. As you walk in they've got a massive chalkboard listing all of the local farms that supply the restaurant, which was a nice touch. As we were seated, the server explained that they change the menu frequently, and that this was the first day of the new menu. Our group ordered some local beers (PBR on tap was also a favorite) and a couple of different wines by the glass, so we didn't really test out the capabilities of the bar, but the selection of beer and wine was good. We got a bunch of starters, including crab ravioli, scallops and a few salads. The bacon on the house salad was amazing! Super crispy. We also shared the chef's board which featured house-made pickles, house-made relishes and mustards, in-house cured meats, and local cheeses. It was outstanding. For entrees our group had steak, pork chops, and pork shoulder. We passed plates around and everything was really high quality and done right. We also shared house made brown-butter ice cream and some fruit-torte type desserts--all really good. At the end the chef came out and we talked with him for a while. He mentioned some of the in house meat-curing techniques. They dry age their bacon for four weeks to get it crispy. The pork is also heritage breed pigs from Virginia. You could really tell a lot of heart and soul is going into the food at Highland Avenue, and it was an exceptional meal.

“Great food!”
Reviewed August 6, 2013

I was there as a guest to attend a meeting for a drug company. The meeting room was a little small for the number of people present. The food was wonderful and fresh. The servers were very friendly. The noise from the other dinners was a little distracting. I will certainly be back with my family very soon!

“Date night with friends”
Reviewed July 29, 2013

We enjoyed dinner with two other couples recently at Highland. The service was prompt, upbeat and informational. The atmosphere is pleasant and unique. The blue crab ravioli as a starter was phenomenal. The light sauce that the ravioIi was wrapped in is something you must try if you stop here. had the skirt steak which was delicious and prepared to perfection. My wife had the trout and it was fantastic. We did get a sample of the grits and everyone at the table thought they were incredible. The wines that the waiter recommended were a great compliment to the meals. This is one of the very top restaurants in Hickory and rivals several quality restaurants in Charlotte. The only area that may need some work is the noise level. The restaurant could use something to capture the noise generated from the open atmosphere but this is by no means a reason not to make this stop a top pick!

“Bar is cool; Food is average.”
Reviewed July 20, 2013

Very cool place to meet up with some friends at the bar. Nice and big. Bartenders seem cool and glad to have you sit with them instead of opting for the full service table option as most patrons do. We have been twice now and enjoyed the bar much better. Great draft beer selection! As far as the food goes, I was hoping for another 4 or 5 star here in Hickory. The food is ok, just not as good as I was hoping.
