We stopped here on our way from Brevard to Savannah for our final night of vacation. Thought it was just a store with stones and gems. Did not expect to have something for the kids to do but were glad we stopped. Elijah Mountain Gem Mine has a set up to buy a $20.00 prospector's bucket and sift through a make shift stream to show the gems. What ever gems and stones you found you keep. The kids had 4 bags of gems. Excellent!

Good place to take the grandchildren when they're visiting. Probably best for the under 12's. Teens would probably be bored.

It was fun to do with a child. A little pricy but not bad at all. She wants to go back and do it again so I guess they will see us again soon.

My wife and i found out about this place through tripadvisor and spent an afternoon there. We purchased the $20 prospectors bucket and sifted through it together and we were not dissapointed. We found tons of gems including amethyst and rose quartz. The people working there were pleasant and helpful.

It is not a trip to Western North Carolina without my wife stopping at least once for gem mining. Throughout the years we have mined at rustic (where you dig your own dirt) to 'salted' (where they plant certain stones and gems into the dirt bags). And since my wife also loves coupons (she had one for two dollars off)...we made the drive from Asheville to Hendersonville (which was around 30 minutes) to Elijah Mountain gem mine. One of the unique features were the specialty buckets in fossils and meteorites as well as gems! We found some exceptional fossil pieces as well as rubies and a two large garnets. The staff were very knowledgable concerning all stones and gems and made the suggestion of having our stones shipped back home from a local post office instead of having them weigh down the luggage (and yes, we found that many gems and stones to keep).
