“Surprisingly interesting and free too”

We brought some adult visitors to this little museum, and they enjoyed it immensely. The fossils traced the timeline of earth with good explanations, and the minerals were clearly displayed. In addition there's a small collection of jewelry for sale that included a lot of North Carolina minerals. A plus was the knowledgeable gem hounds manning the museum, full of local information. The children in the museum at the time got a kick out of the geode breaking, and adults as well. A treat for the eyes and the mind.

“Very interesting for a small town”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 4, 2014

We were surprised at both the variety and quality of the various gems on display. The staff was very helpful and we met some very knowledgeable personnel that enlighted us about gems and minerals. We did learn that all the local gem and ruby mines are simply businesses that import all their gems from distant suppliers. It was kind of learning that there was no Tooth Fairy. Worth the visit.

“INTERESTING SMALL MUSEUM”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 27, 2013

This museum was in the busy, revitalized downtown area of Hendersonville just down the street from the Black Bear Coffee Co. where I had lunch.

The museum occupies the downstairs of the Henderson County Genealogical and Historical Society building.

Admission is free.

The museum is small but interesting and well done.

The first exhibit was a case full of minerals with fluorescent qualities which reflected different colors under different lights.

Then, I looked at the dozens of display cases full of minerals, stones, gems, and geodes. I liked the lapis lazuli and amethyst the best.

There were also dinosaur eggs and a Tyrannosaurus skull. There were a few activities for children.

There were various pieces of jewelry and other items made with minerals and gem stones for sale in the small gift shop area.

It was nice little take.

“Total waste of time”

Not worth the time or money. Boring displays of useless rocks. Maybe ok for serious rock hounds but just deadly boring for the rest of us.
